NHTSA Campaign I.D. Numbers: 20E-016 and 20E-027

Dear Sir or Madam,

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Harbor Freight Tools ("HFT") has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in certain Pittsburgh Automotive 3 Ton Heavy Duty Steel Jack Stands (models 61196 or 56371) and 6 Ton Heavy Duty Steel Jack Stands (model 61197). Our records reflect that you purchased at least one of these pairs of Jack Stands.

What is the Condition?

For certain units of the Pittsburgh Automotive 3 Ton and 6 Ton Heavy Duty Steel Jack Stands there is a potential, while under load and with a shift in weight, for the pawl to disengage from the extension lifting post, allowing the stand to drop suddenly. This condition could cause serious injury for people near or under a lifted vehicle, and/or damage to property. As a precautionary measure, we request that you discontinue use of the jack stand(s) identified below immediately.

Jack Stands included in this recall campaign include:

FWIW it seems more like user error than an actual product defect.

From an email I received earlier this afternoon:

Got some older orange and white stands. Guess they are not included in this.

Thanks for the heads up OP.

FWIW, I'm paranoid when working under my vehicles and don't personally use any stands that don't have secondary (or primary) pin locks. YMMV

I know a lot of us SDers utilize Harbor Freight for their low cost tools and I personally have one of these recalled items, PLEASE RETURN THESE ASAP. HF is providing gift cards for the purchase price (idk how they figure out that part w/out receipt)

Recall documents attached.

item numbers 56371 or 61196 on 3-ton models
Item Number 61197 on 6-ton models

The recall document says that the problem could affect more than 450,000 6-ton jack stands produced between 2013 and 2019 and nearly 1.3 million 3-ton jack stands produced between 2012 and 2020. These jack stands were sold under the Pittsburg brand name, and can be identified by item numbers 56371 or 61196 on 3-ton models, and 61197 on 6-ton models.

Harbor Freight urges anybody in possession of affected jack stands to return them to the store in exchange for a gift card equal to the price of the stands. Any unsold jack stands covered by the recall have been removed from stores. Check on your buddies and spread the word around—these jack stands are ubiquitous, and a failure like this could be fatal.

I have HF 6 ton jack stands bought around 2005. Should I scrap them to be safe?

Oh, that's a relief, I'm not using HF ones, I'm still using some noname rusted jack stands from 1980s that I grabbed for $5 at a local garage sale. I must be safe then, hooray!
