The SURGE line is much quieter than a standard impact driver, but has significantly less torque. This model is listed @ 450 in/lbs, which is about 30% of the torque that the other Milwaukee M18 impact drivers produce. These are great for driving screws inside a building without hearing protection but forget about driving lag bolts!

Edit: I am wrong, see posts below regarding a flatter torque curve. Wish I knew this before I picked up my impact driver, it is loud as hell!

The torque profile is entirely different, and the numbers are actually largely irrelevant. Surge applies less force over a longer cycle, the net energy output is almost identical to the gen 2 impact. The Surge driver will drive pretty much anything the standard impact will. The only time it's an issue is metal on metal fastening where you need more than ~40ft lbs this driver produces. Anything up to a 1/2 lag into wood shouldn't be a problem which is where the regular impact driver will start having issues as well.

The peak torque might not be as high, but the torque curve is much flatter so they can actually drive bolts in faster.

$149 for the tool only is the full retail price. Not a slick deal.

There is a deal floating around on that as well, Grainger has them. 8.0 battery too for maybe 250?

I like the torque of my surge better than my gen 2 fuel. In fact, I sold the regular one on the bay. Surge is so much nicer to use.

Not that great of a deal honestly. I believe I saw the m18 fuel hammer drill and surge impact w/ 2 5.0ah batteries and charger for $300 on here. If you just need the surge you could keep the batteries and sell the hammer drill for $100 and have 2 5.0s for $50 more
