Seems like a solid deal if you need one...powerhead and 6" bit included. Has pretty good reviews. Renting one is about $90 per day.

Own this model, dug at least 30 holes with it so far. Good value if you have to do a fence. I think I paid $125 last year

Phoenix and most of the southwest I presume. 2 foot boulders, caliche, hardened clay, etc.

Can you use this auger to dig up/loosen dirt for installing a french drain?

I don't see why not. I started using it today, it works well for holes...not sure about doing a French drain though...those are no fun
