This is a pretty solid deal for an awesome watch if you are a runner / cyclist / swimmer. It has nearly all of the features of the most current version (Fenix 6). What it is missing, pulse oximeter, isn't very accurate and kills the battery if you have it on. On my 6x it goes from 18 days to 8-9.

Things that are great:
- Accurate GPS
- Fantastic Garmin data analysis of your workout / exercise
- Ongoing fitness tracking and stats (daily steps, sleep, VO2 Max, TONS of other stuff)
- Durable. Super durable.
- While it isn't a showpiece, it does make a statement - I love the look and it gets tons of compliments (well, I don't have the 5 Plus, but same with both my 5X and 6X).
- Maps, while not perfect, is very handy
- Music onboard makes it super easy to grab some headphones and go run - quick and easy.
- Garmin Pay is great, especially in the COVID era where you don't want to touch anything you don't have too.

Not as good:
- It's fairly heavy. I got used to it very quickly and can't tell the difference. Run marathons with it and no issues at all, but it has more heft than your Timex.
- Maps isn't perfect. Very accurate, but small on that screen and use with buttons can be clunky. That said, if you are in a bind, they work plenty well to get you home safely. No wifi or data needed, just the GPS signal available anywhere outside.
- It is not an Apple Watch. It is a fitness watch. It will give you notifications, but its focus is fitness, not flashy graphics.

I've owned a bunch of Garmins: 305, 620, 645M, 5X, and now 6X. All have been rock solid and reliable. I've only replaced them becuase I'm a gadget junkie and an OCD runner. The 5 Plus is really the sweet spot with some critical features added (music, maps) and only missing a few that aren't a big deal. Thumbs up from me.
I have this, and I can agree with a lot of what you said. This thing is a TANK. I will say though, on my iPhone the watch has stopped syncing data anymore and will only do it when I open the app. Then it takes a literal 5-8 minutes to sync all the days of information since the last time I opened the app. I figured this out when I started getting "0 steps a week" in the challenges it puts you in.

Can someone enlighten me please? I have a Samsung Gear S and I've been wearing it for like 2 years now.
I don't exercise much, tho I should...
I just changed my phone from a note 9 to an iPhone. The Samsung watch works ok mostly but now, it won't recognize when i go on my bike or run a bit... It did before and while I never cared all that much for what it recorded, it was nice to have.
My question is, how would this compare to my Samsung and better yet, how it compares to an apple watch since, that was what I was thinking of getting next...
Thank you!
Comparing it to an Apple Watch is really apples to oranges. The Apple Watch is a lifestyle smart watch that does some fitness stuff.

This is a full blown fitness watch that does some lifestyle things.

If you're serious into running, swimming, cycling, hiking, etc then this watch is a no brainer. If you're just the occasional 5k, go for a walk around the neighborhood, then this will be overkill and the Apple Watch will suit you fine.

I have this watch. It's great. I love it.

My wife has this watch - she loves it as well. She also has an Apple Watch. She uses each differently and they excel at what they do amazingly well.

Interesting. Do you have WiFi sync on?

Mine will automatically sync w/o even having to connect to my phone or computer. It'll sync directly through my WiFi. Usually it syncs before I'm even through the door after a run or bike ride. As soon as it can grab my home's WiFi it's syncing.

Will it do gym / resistance workout tracking? How is it for cycling?

I can attest to this... I haven't had to connect it to my PC after the initial setup... all firmware updates just happen wirelessly too. The watch works great with the Garmin App.... it even syncs up with other apps like Nike Run or MyFitnessPal.

I have been using Garmin for many years, even got Garmin watches for my kids. I have a Fenix 5x Plus now. Fenix watches are, like others have said, built like a tank. However, Garmin does not update the firmware to include the latest software functions. My Fenix is missing Virtual Run, which exists on cheaper product lines of Garmin for watches that came out less than a year later. There is really no reason for me to upgrade Fenix, and I will look around for alternative brands next year. I hear good things about Coros watches and their software upgrades.

The thing that keeps me from going to other brands is Garmin Connect. I have yet to find anything I like better...

I'm training for a marathon and deciding between this, forerunner 945, and Fenix 6s pro, which are both $479 on AAFES (and tax free). Are either of those worth $50 more?

I've had a 935 for almost 2 years. I love it. Using it with phone notifications and 30 miles a week of running and I get through a whole week on the charge. I would like if my old model had music built in but I can live with running with my watch. The heart rate monitor is as accurate for me as my polar strap that I use on my Peloton. I'm very happy, even at the price I paid.

Are you sure? I'm pretty sure the Fenix 5 does have Wifi - maybe you just don't have it set up/activated? I know my 5+ does have Wifi sync, and even my older Garmin stuff had it.

I think the biggest thing 5X has is maps. But I was pretty sure they all have WiFi capabilities.
