Monoprice currently has the Monolith Liquid Spark and Liquid Platinum headphone amps on sale.

Liquid Spark [monoprice.com] (use code: LIQUID20)

Liquid Platinum [monoprice.com] (use code: LIQUID50)

Both headphone amps are highly reviewed at their price points. I've owned a Liquid Spark, and I think it compares closely to the other top ~$100 amps. For my money, I prefer the Magni 3 Heresy, but the Liquid Spark may be a better choice at $20 cheaper before tax and shipping. I find the Spark to be smoother and warmer than the Magnis, though the #s say it's a smidge less clean than the Magnis. If you're unsure/undecided, I don't think you can go wrong with either choice.

I forgot to mention. The only downside of this amp is huge ugly power brick. It kind of looks like a power brick of a 17" gaming laptop.

Liquid spark for $80 is pretty much a no-brainer. It drives my 300 ohm Massdrop 6xx (similar to Sennheiser HD650). Reviews have mentioned that spark sounds a bit warmer compared to JDS labs Atom. I haven't heard the Atom, but I think it might be true. I did compare it to Fiio K3 usb-powered fax/amp and spark drove my HD6xx much better. If you connect Liquid Spark to a decent deck it will sound phenomenal.
Do you use DAC with it?

For those interested in objective measurement of the Liquid Spark, check out this page [audiosciencereview.com].

Yes, Topping D30 and it pairs really well with this amp. If you decide to go for it, beware of fakes on Amazon.

I love my Liquid Platinum but swapped tubes with Amperex Orange Globes. That did a "WOW" effect in my setup.
Where can I find these? I'm worried about getting them from eBay since there are fakes out there.

How does the Spark compare to the $30-50 models that have very good DAC and 80w RMS per channel?
Looking for an inexpensive solution for my 12 year old. Do you have any links, or names of amps with dacs like that?

You may think I'm Fulla Schitt, but I'd take that over the Liquid Spark anyday.
Agreed 110%. I've owned the Fulla Schitt for a little over a year and its by far the best DAC/AMP on the market for under $100.

JDS Atom amp is better. Designed and made in the USA.

20% discount is not a big deal in amplifiers.
That generalization does not apply here for the spark. 80 is a great price.

Is there a decent headphone pre tube amp that goes for $50-100, that I can connect to an amp like the atom?
Or am I better off getting some sort of dsp?
Check out the FX-AUDIO TUBE-03 or similar if you are looking to give tube like warmth to this amp (though I own the spark and it's much warmer naturally than say one of the THX amps). You may be looking for a DAC though, check out the topping d10 or matching cavalli DAC on monoprice.

I would imagine that the folks on this thread represent a biased sample (no pun intended), but for someone like me who has no experience with headphone amps, would something like this make a difference with the Sennhesier HD497s or HD203s that I have and a good audio source (CD, FLAC)? Or would that be overkill?
Thanks

Yeah, I have the d10 & d30. Was just looking into a tube pre amp. I'll have to check out the Tube-03. Thanks.
If only I could afford the mini dsp. They're still around $200.

An amp is needed to drive thirsty headphones (ex. Electrostat or Planar). Sometimes a source device has a limited output, which can make the aforementioned headphones sound hollow, or lacking fullness. I don't know much about Senn, mostly a fan of Audeze and Monolith.

I wouldn't pay for a fancy setup just for 320 MP3 >=. For FLAC, WAV, or DSD it makes sense. Personally I'd buy a DAC/DAP before an amp.
