This is a really good deal if someone wants a Tivo but for me OTA took a back seat to on-demand streaming so I prefer headless DVR options (Recast, Tablo, HDHR, Plex, etc.). Most of my entertainment comes from Netflix, Hulu, etc.

Also, once you need to expand those recordings to more than one screen Tivo makes even more sense.

I personally use Plex for OTA but if I had to do it all over again I would probably go with Recast.
When my Roamio dies (on I think year 4 or 5 of its current life) I will probably switch to Amazon recast. I have no minis... but with the bigger (1tb) recast price at less than $200 and ability to throw recordings to a $25 fire stick and also cast onto mobile devices free of charge; I can't stay tied to Tivo any longer. Too bad cus they have a great platform, but the money grab of hundreds for the base unit, $150 for a mini, $150 for a lifetime subscription that dies with your TiVo, and another $150(ish) to watch on your iPad? Glad players like amazon are coming in to bust up their business model- all of the above for $200 thru amazon.

If you need a TiVo this is a good price. However before pulling the trigger check out the Amazon recast. Only downfall I have seen is 720p for the recast vs full 1080 with TiVo; which I hope is addressed with an updated version soon.

By the time you save any money. The tivo's will malfunction. Not even worth it.
I've had many TiVos since the start. ALL are still working and good condition.

Only the OTA version does not accept a cable card. VOX just means voice activated remote ability.

Is there a specific model for the Cable Card version? All i see is Vox 500gb and Vox 1tb. I need to replace my Window Media Center PC as i am no longer receiving guide updates. This would be a great value bundled with the lifetime package.

Both models you list are cable card versions. I believe the Vox 500GB has 4 tuners and can also do OTA (OTA or cable but not both at same time). The 1TB version is cable card only and has 6 tuners.

If you're willing - could you elaborate a little? I currently have HDHR and I have a Plex server minus the plexpass to make it a DVR (being cheap, I tried the trial and keep waiting for the discount email that has never come) I'm a Tivo fan... or at least Tivo nostalgic (I have an old Series 2 with lifetime still in my basement) but am more and more into the Amazon eco-system. Would be interested in how the Recast won you.

Nonsense. I was a Tivo early adopter back in '99/'00, and been using them ever since. I've upgraded 4 or 5 times since but never b/c of a technical issue.

Sorry if this has been your experience, that's really unfortunate. I had a TiVo series 3 and now have a Roamio, and both have been rock solid over the years. I paid for the lifetime service on each, and have so far saved hundreds, if not thousands of dollars over what I'd have paid the cable company.

With that said, though, I doubt I'll buy another TiVo. As noted above, CableCard support is a real challenge these days. Plus, the current ownership has really degraded the TiVo experience - I find the search and guide functionality to be in decline, and the new interface has their own ads before playing shows I fortunately have the old interface).

It was a good run, and I've been a happy customer for a decade and a half, but I think the tech has run its course.

Not disagreeing with anything you mention but fwiw, these Bolts have the Stream functionality built in for streaming to iPads/cell phones.

Great, I don't really care about having 6 tuners--500gb is plenty for storage. I'll get the cheaper of the two.We rarely watch cable but it's a nice thing to have. I'm currently in a verizon gigabit fios plan and my bill is only 94.00 a month. In other words, i pay very little for cable.

Can I stream my shows (or download them) with the OTA version? I currently have 2 Roamios but they don't stream any of my shows.
Yes, you can stream to iOS/Android devices; that functionality is built in to all Bolt versions.

Yeah same, I've only had one issue with an old tivo mini dying that was out of warranty, but they sent me a brand new vox model for $40 as a replacement (would have paid the $40 to upgrade anyway).

I agree that the ads before playing the show recording sucks, but you can press the D or Skip button to skip the ad.

Well, for now at least.

Picked up the recast 1tb last year and couldn't be happier, even the wife is happy with it. Very easy to setup and navigate, nice ui, and plenty of options/customizations to suit your needs.

The people working at Tivo have a chip on their shoulder. Ive had some lengthy conversations with their support/dev and they think they are doing you a favor by existing. They are now forcing you to watch an ad when you watch a recording despite having a
feature that skips commercials. They say they need the money and their cust base prefers a commercial vs price increase, yet they asked no one, nor care that they have already accepted $ for a service they are changing. All of this after they force added promoted streaming channels on every page of the chan guide. They said well 'we improve your gui all the time for free, we have to make money.' This is their high level thought process.
