These things are crap, and I am not sure why slickdeals keeps pushing them (I guess because they are "cheap" as in the price, but even for free, I would not use one of these.

My list of problems after using one for a weekend of camping:
1. Turns on automatically by accident. When you lift the light part up, it turns on, well, if it lifts up a little bit, it will turn on including in your backpack draining your battery.
2. No light diffuser, so when you turn the thing on, you have a super bright spotlight hitting you right in the face. And since it is all around, there is no way to direct it away from you.
3. No light control, very quickly stop staying in position when you had it half way or all the way up, would drop down to about 20% up, so enough to not get any light, but yet also drain the battery.
4. You do not get 72 hours, again, I went camping on a weekend trip, somehow it came on while hiking and did not last the full day. Maybe got a full 24 hours out of it, but not the entire weekend.
5. Not water resistant, battery pack and switching area had no real water seal protection. I did not get this thing wet, but I highly doubt it would survive a good rain. Now that I think of it, since I never plan on using mine again, maybe I should spray it with a hose to verify this.

Again, avoid at all cost, not worth it even for free.

Well....if you are expecting REI quality....no

But for generic lanterns for kids and guests at camping or outages...
you can't beat what they do for the price

$20 for 8?

That's a no brainer

Would I buy these for me? No.
But for Cub scouts/boy scouts, these are great. Nearly disposable price, if the loose or break it no problem.

Truly considering buying some for my group.

A lot of folks will need these come Jun 1, and utilities get cut off.

I am a former scout master and dad to 2 eagle scouts, these would be terrible for scouting.

Too heavy, too big, not reliable, not water resistant. Scouts should use head lamps with a red filter for night use.

These are great for what they are, bought some for my nieces and nephews last year and they love them for screwing around at night. Also used briefly during a power outage, worked wonderful. Very bright.
