Best to post: the style, top mount side by side you need, the dimensions of the space you have, if a shallow or deep model is required, cu ft capacity and any special features desired. Measure fridge cabinet without door to insure it can be pass through an entry door. Fridge doors often must be removed to get them past walkways especially in older homes. Although this requires a few hand tools and a bit of patience it is not terribly difficult and would not avoid a model that requires it.

One special feature I appreciate is an indicator light for defrost cycle. I also look at the number and cost of replacement circuit boards since we have many power surges here. My Frigidaire side by side only uses a single defrost control board which can easily be replaced by anyone with a screw driver in 15 minutes and costs $25 on Amazon.

Folks who enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables usually pay special attention to crisper drawer(s) and humidity control. Paying more initially can be cheaper in the long run due to savings in better preservation of food.

Shelves: number, ease of adjustment and of removal for cleaning

Interior: location and number of cold air outlets for even cooling. One is sufficient even with low flow but it is necessary to insure that you will not block it or the return over-fill with food. Compare fit and finish, apparent tightness of seams, quality and thickness of door gasket, number of lights.

I prefer manual rather than digital controls for reliability and low cost of repairs. I don't pay more for L.E.D. lights because bulbs can be replaced with cheap L.E.D. ones. I look at how easy it is to clean condenser coil and fan which may be accessed from front bottom or rear which is more difficult. Keeping these clean saves $$$ in power, lengthens the life of the unit and keeps food colder.

Noise: most are fairly quiet these days but if located close to a bedroom certain models are exceptionally quiet

Frill features which probably are not worth paying more for include smart home connectivity, in-door water and ice dispenser. But it is true that being alerted to unsafe food temperature may prevent spoilage and even food poisoning. Since I do not have digital controls or read out I regularly dip a thermometer in to a pint of water I keep in the fridge for that purpose, a good practice which few would bother doing.

Energy efficiency rating

Once you have identified features and size it is a simple matter to identify the models that meet you specification and to start tracking prices. Check Costco. Lesser known or foreign made brands can be O.K. but should offer significant savings. Costco doesn't have a time limit on their satisfaction guarantee but a truck and labor is required to return. Often there are reliable independent folks who will deliver, install or return.

Service contracts: I have gotten at least 10 years out of my WPC fridges. IMO service contracts on fridge are not a good value. If it survives the one year in-home warranty which I would insure it has then likely will last another 5 to 9 years if you give it good care and cleaning.

" I also look at the number and cost of replacement circuit boards since we have many power surges here"

For the last 10 years I've been plugging all my appliances with circuit boards - washer, dishwasher, fridge, etc. into good surge supressors. So far, haven't lost anything to lightning, power outs, or surges.
Pretty cheap preventive.
