iOS/iPadOS app is performing nonstop background activity and killing battery

563 55 May 29, 2020 at 02:13 AM
For the last couple of versions (5.18 and 5.19), the iOS/iPadOS Slickdeals app is doing nonstop background activity and killing the device battery. I have Background App Refresh DISABLED, and the Battery Activity shows a full 60 of 60 min. of each hour as active, even while I am asleep. This is happening on two separate iPhones and an iPad. All show the culprit to be Slickdeals.

The only way to stop it is to forcibly kill the app.

I have submitted feedback, and there are reviews in the App Store with other users seeing the same behavior.

This is kind of a showstopper and needs to be escalated.

I am running iOS/iPadOS 13.5.

Hi verdi1987,

Thanks for reporting this issue! We're actively looking into reproducing this issue now internally. We ran a test last night with devices on iOS 13.5 and Background refresh enabled and didn't see this issue, so we'll try it today with the Background refresh disabled.
I think I saw some users reporting that for other apps that have started showing this issue on iOS 13.5 that uninstalling and reinstalling the app fixed the issue as well for them, if you want to try that out as a potential fix.

Thanks. I will give that a try.

I think I have *almost* eliminated this issue by doing the following:
1. Identify apps that have continuous background activity.
2. Delete affected apps.
3. Restart device.
4. Reinstall apps.
5. For good measure, reset Location and Privacy in iOS/iPadOS Settings.

For me, the same apps across several devices all showed continuous background activity. After performing the above steps, so far only one app (not Slickdeals) is still exhibiting problems. More time is needed to see if it's resolved long-term. I have submitted a bug report to Apple. There may still be some optimization needed in Slickdeals since not all apps appear to suffer this issue, and I saw the issue in Slickdeals (and a few other apps) on three separate devices.

Unfortunately, the problem has returned after reinstalling the app.

Thank you so much for going through those steps and also listing it out. I've already passed this along to our QA team so that they can continue trying to reproduce this issue.
Unfortunately, they were not able to reproduce it on the device they're testing with even with the Background Refresh turned off.

There does seem to be a lot of complaints in general regarding iOS 13.5 and battery drain: https://mobile.twitter.com/search...ery&f=live

QA was testing on a new phone, but I'm curious if the battery max capacity has any impact on whether this issue happens or not. Apple did introduce some changes to Battery related stuff in 13.5, but maybe it only happens with older devices where the max capacity is lower. Could you check the max capacity on your devices and let me know what they are at? You can check by going to Settings -> Battery.

Also, since you're still able to reproduce this issue, QA did want to check if push notifications had any impact as well, so could you also try turning off all push notifications for Slickdeals, either through the iPhone Settings or through the app's Settings page?

Once again, I really do appreciate you trying out all these steps and letting us know. Once we're able to reproduce it internally, it'll be much easier to know what the fix for this issue should be.

Thank you for the update. I have found threads as well on Apple Discussion forums and MacRumors with similar battery complaints. Also, a lot of app reviews are noting battery drain.

My devices are iPhone 11 Pro at 95% battery health, iPhone XS Max at 92%, and an iPad Pro 11-inch for which battery health is not reported but is fairly new. All had been running iOS/iPadOS 13.5. Today, I updated the XS Max to 13.5.5 beta in the hope that Apple may have addressed the issue, but it is not yet resolved in beta. The other two devices remain on 13.5.

I have suspected that push notifications may be a factor, as most (but not all) of my affected apps are apps that have frequent notifications. I will test with notifications disabled.

Unfortunately, even with no notifications disabled, the background activity persists.

This has been actually happening to me for a while now. Battery statistics shows SD app with background activity for the entire hour with the light blue bar, even when the phone's locked. The hit to battery doesn't seem to be much, but it's strange that it somehow gets stuck running in the background for that long. Happened before 13.5 came out too. I should have probably reported this earlier but never got around to it until searching for it just now.

That's unfortunate, but still thanks for trying that out.

Hmm.. that seems like a related but less severe version of this issue. Regardless, thanks for posting about it.

In terms of updates regarding the situation, we have still yet to recreate this issue in-house.

For next steps, we'll be trying to monitor battery usage using one of our development tools to see if anything in particular is more draining than others.

We'll also see if disabling all background activities of the app is a possibility or not.

Perhaps one important detail is that I deny location permissions to Slickdeals. I have not tested with location enabled, but you may want to have your QA check that case.

We've actually disabled all location related functionalities a few months ago and removed the location permissions 1 or 2 releases ago.
