Basic entry level router. I would say no to it. Don't cheap out on router.
With only 5$ extra, AC1200 is much more better than this in terms of signal strength, wifi range, security and network speed.

You are right it would increase range and signal strength, but WAN and LAN ports max at 100 Mbps which means that the router is only beneficial for those who need a connection stronger, not speed. I own a C8 and C9 for my home network and they are great routers. Just be aware of WAN port connection speed.

Most people have internet under 100Mbps so it really doesn't make sense for them to buy better routers...

Idk about ddwrt, but you definitely don't want this if you have internet speed faster than 100mbps (you'll be limited by the ethernet ports on the back). The cheapest new router I'd recommend that you can get with gigabit ports (which you'll need) is the TP-Link Archer A6/C6 for about $40-50. Not positive on any open firmware for that either though. Just make sure whatever router you get has gigabit ethernet ports.

I bought this about five years ago. It was honestly garbage. Don't buy it. Switched to the C9/AC1900 and used that for four years with DD-WRT. Worked great, would recommend. I just switched to Ubiquiti equipment very recently. Probably going to put the C9 with DD-WRT on ebay.

Newegg has a refurb A6 that goes in and out of stock for $35 if you don't mind rolling the dice with a refurb and have an extra $10.
