TP Link are great but keep in mind they don't have 3 way dimmer. If you have that specific setup that might be something to consider.
I learned that little late, so now I'll have different apps for different switches. They still work with Google and Alexa, it's just annoyance.

Do you need the app installed for it to work with Google home?

After you set it up initially you don't need the app after connecting it to Google Home. I almost never use it.

Say more. Can another TP-Link Kasa switch be programmed to command the lights from another switch (essentially acting as a virtual 3-way)? Or is there another Kasa model that supports hard-wired 3-way that is the suggested approach. I am building an addition and about to start electrical so I want to do it "right."

I believe there's another model. Not sure about kasa but you can find them on Amazon.

From what I've read there is no workaround. If you have a 3 way you need dedicated 3 way smart switches. Even if the additional switch is on at all times etc it won't work

I've gotten customer returns at this price, but never new ones. I'd be all over this, but I've run out of light switches to replace Smilie

Does anybody sell a good, smart 3 way dimmer?

In order to use this to replace an existing three way, you just connect the traveling wire on one box to the common on that same switch thereby eliminating the second switch from the circuit. I used one of these dimmers for a friend like that. It does eliminate one of the two switches, but since the switch become smart, it eliminates the need for a three way in most uses.

You can use one switch to control another switch through their Smart Actions. But according to the app "only 3 smart actions can be enabled at one time", which is a surprisingly small limit.

Things like sunset/sunrise triggers are also grouped in that section, but could be also implemented via IFTTT. While I've used both, I prefer to minimize how many automations I keep in each service, mostly for traceability.

Lutron Caseta has the Pico remote that can act like a second switch. And can be mounted like one.
