I saw this deal on Home Depot. Seems good for a chisel this size and quality. Best of all, shipping is free for me in Colorado, although I'm not sure that holds true elsewhere. List price for the tool is about $18 according to the urrea catalog.

There 7/8inch x 12inch chisel is a bit more expensive, but some people might want a smaller size. $9.97 +tax

Note: I ordered the 1 inch x 12 inch chisel and the packaging from the factory was poor enough that the chisel busted itself out of the box before it arrived at my house. Home Depot took care of the issue after my 30 minute wait on hold.

edit: FYI, these ship directly from the distribution center in San Antonio.

It's a chisel. Why does the packaging matter?

It doesn't.

He said it busted out of the box... meaning that when he got the box, the chisel was not in there.

What's a good selection if you wanna chisel out some door hinge grooves. I was going to buy a router and the attachment but I just can't swing it right now.

I read this like "urethra cold chisel" for a second and it made many of my body parts shutter.

Perhaps if your frame was masonry. If, on the off chance you have a wooden frame, this would not be the correct chisel to buy. You would buy a wood chisel.

If there's an Aldi near you, check their random section for the workzone chisels, you may get lucky.
Otherwise https://www.harborfreight.com/han...69471.html will likely get you through.

With any chisel, i'd recommend being prepared to at least hone it out of the box if not full on sharpen it. There are a lot of ways to do this, I started with this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ki8tt-VjwqI
and recommend it because using sandpaper makes it a cheap initial investment.
$4 and a hard flat surface and you're off to the races

Is it causing the hammer to slide off or user error?

Total user error. I pay attention to what I am chipping, my hand slides up and I whack my knuckle with the hammer. Doesn't matter how hard I try It happens every time.

It helps when I cut a hole in a sponge and slide it up the chisel as a knuckle guard though.

Not sure what kind of hammer you are using, but I like using a club or drilling hammer for cold chisels since they are heavy and have a large striking surface. The standard claw or rip hammers just take too long. The one-handed sledges have too long of a handle and a rounded heads which give me the same trouble you are having.

Pro tip thx! I picked up a large hammer drill that tends do better that I could with hammer and chisel. I'll try that should I need to go that route in the future.
