Crayola has made 'multicultural' products for years. I worked at a school supply warehouse during my college summers for two years ('98 and '99) and they sold multicultural crayons, construction paper, clay, markers and I think colored pencils. The sets were really small though, maybe like 10 options and the issue recently became the fact that they referred to all the crayons that were not the weird peach/pinky 'flesh' as their true crayola color like 'mahogany' and things like that which it turns out is offensive. I believe they were all recently renamed thanks to a little girl who pointed out that it was weird/offensive (because not surprisingly, children are smarter than most adults).

So no these are not racist and I'd argue they aren't scummy either. They are sets that have literally been around for ages, were really only available to schools, and more culturally sensitive.

Remember when there used to be a color in the original 64 set called "flesh" ?
That was back in 1962.

I am not that old, so I had the 'luxury' of the modern colors. In elementary school, you would rarely if ever find colors that match your skin, no matter your race. It was common to use yellow, orange, brown, purple, whatever to draw people because the previous kid in the class probably ate the desirable colors.

1962? I was born in '73, and they were in my sets. Agreed re previous kid in class for sure 😂

I'm happy to see the Smurfs are represented with the blue color.

They renamed it peach, and it still uses the same RGB color values.

There was a brilliant Bloom County Sunday comic about that time. Sunday comic=color...

Oliver goes through the whole story with a huge bandaid on his forehead. They do the story.

Then in the last frame Oliver is looking at Opus, pointing to the bandaid and says "Flesh Colored".

Now that I have a little guy, I understand how hard it is for him to grasp why the bandaid is that color. So I'm going with not racist, especially when you offer it at a reasonable accessible price with low key box verbiage like this has.

Me: they are being very inclusive with the green and blue

The blue is for people being strangled, just seconds before they pass away. The green is for people watching at the thing happens, then feeling sick of it and vomit.

Yeah, I'm with ya. Where's the Lego? Cool crayons though. Not angry, this reminded me they exist.

Im waiting for the next ipad to come with a pen that can "see" and you can just select "flesh" and scan your arm, or whoever you are drawing.

My wife is a teacher. These have been around for years, this is not in response to anything current. No need to read into anything and pass judgment on a company for doing what its always done.
