I was getting ready to pull the trigger to the tune of $850 for a Gibson Midtown with p90s. Any opinions about this instead?

D'Angelico Premier is their lowest line & not really a great one. Assuming you'd be buying used Gibson Midtown... US made and much higher quality than an Asian made D'angelico premier. That being said, 2 different guitars. Midtown is sort of a Les Paul more than a semi hollow and the D'angelico is more that Hollowbody thing.

Ordered one from your last thread for this (which is still active, interestingly enough), and it arrived with the box looking like it was used as a prop in a WWE skit, and the guitar with a big gash in the top and side near the controls. All in all a very poor packaging job exacerbated by rough handling. I sent it back but am waiting for MF to credit me before ordering another as they no longer do exchanges which is a real pain in situations like this. Still debating on whether or not I want to chance having another one delivered.

This is a good guitar for the price if you're starting out, but it definitely doesn't compare to a US-made guitar. This guitar is made in Indonesia.

I used to own a 2015 Midtown Standard in Tobacco Sunburst, and that guitar player beautifully. I recently sold it to get a Gretsch 6118T. Stick with the Midtown. Great sound, looks beautiful, and you definitely can't go wrong with the p90s.

Thanks. I'm definitely not just starting out. I have played D'Angelicos at GC and elsewhere and have not been too impressed

So if you played them and wasn't impressed, then maybe you answered your own question?
