Unfortunately they don't make these in black yet. And in q&a, manufacturer says TC of cotton layer is only 30. Keep in mind these and the other non medical masks we've seen on FP recently do not protect you from getting coronavirus, but they do help stop the transmission from you to others. Studies referenced by the coronavirus task force show these work for that purpose, so if we all do our part then we can save lives.

Apparently, I can try before I buy...so I can get them, test their fit, and return for free if I don't like. This seems a, helpful and b, unsanitary.

Stop spreading bad information. Even a cloth mask can reduce your chances of getting COVID. Google the studies. It's silly to think cloth only works to filter particles in one direction. Yes, there are better masks, but who's going to skip a 40% buff to hold out for an expensive and unavailable 95% buff. Get what you can afford, what is comfortable enough to keep you wearing it, and what's available.

A side note: studies are now showing medical "paper" masks have a flaw with fitting allowing for gaps that cloth masks tend to not have. Another study out of China has shown that n85 masks tend to be taken off more frequently and used beyond the effective period longer than more comfortable breathable masks. So yeah, there's no one true perfect mask. Any mask is helpful. Stop discouraging people with things that simply aren't fact.

I picked these up over the weekend. Not a bad fit for a slightly larger than average sized face, but anything larger might be pushing it. Quality is mostly okay, only came across one so far with a bad stitch. I dyed a handful with some Rit Synthetic, and inserted some aluminum nose bridge strips (using the tie cord end and inching it all the way to the center) — I'm happy with the results.

The price is a great value IMO ($0.84/mask). I would argue that this isn't really a slick deal since the price hasn't fluctuated at all, but happy that it gets the word out.

or if you know you don't have it and aren't worried about catching it, go out without one.

people who are sick, or are afraid of getting sick, feel free.

also nmote - that masks like these only partially block against larger droplets...smaller stuff can get through unless you're wearing n95...so take that as well
Bad advice, you should always wear a mask, slow the spread, we can get back to work.

Your facts are as unfounded. Cloth masks help stop transmission from you to others because they catch large droplets, but provide minimal protection for yourself because those droplets or particles will stay and eventally penetrate your cloth mask to your nose and mouth.

And those 95% buff you speak of are not expensive. Disposable surgical masks made with meltblown fabric cost about 50 -70 cents on the market right now.

Exactly!

I don't wear a mask. I am healthy and will not live in fear the rest of my life.

If I become ill, I will quarantine and take steps to not make others ill. Otherwise, business as usual for me! Smilie
If your a-sypmtomatic, rub your nose, touch a handle, an at risk person touches that handle after you, rubs their nose, they get sick and die, that's on you. It's common courtesy.

Look up 'asymptomatic.' Masks work when everyone wears them. It's more common sense than fear.

A Hong Kong masks study of COVID-19 using hamsters [cnbc.com] with surgical masks protecting their cages showed:

# of infections when
- masks near infected = 16.7%
- masks near healthy = 33%
- nobody wears masks = 66.7%

Notable is that having only the healthy "wearing" masks nevertheless reduced infections by 50%. Also, "The hamsters who were still infected despite having the mask barrier also had less of the virus in their bodies compared to those infected without the masks."
