Both are $100 of with Google Fi activation. Past Fi offers have only required activation for a few minutes with prorated line fee refunded. Phones were also unlocked. YMMV

Terms state it must be active for 30 days, so one month of service is not bad at all for only $20 bucks.

Promotion Terms: $100 off Moto G Power with Activation
Get a $100 phone discount (from $249 to $149) with the purchase and activation of a Moto G Power from fi.google.com.
How do I qualify for the $100 discount?
You can qualify as either a new or existing Google Fi customer.
To qualify for the discount, you need to :
Have active Fi service with the same email you used to purchase the phone.
Activate the purchased Moto G Power within 30 days of the shipment confirmation email and remain active for 30 consecutive days (this can be done by you or anyone on your group plan).
The discounted price will automatically apply during checkout. If you do not meet the conditions above, the discounted amount will be charged to your Google Pay account to match the full price of the phone.
Any other details to know?
Offer is valid until June 21, 2020 at 11:59 PM PST, or while supplies last.
For individual plans, limit one per person. For group plans, limit one per group plan member.
Offer is only available to U.S. residents 18 years or older, and requires Google Pay and Google Fi accounts.
Unless otherwise stated, this offer cannot be combined with other offers.
Discount is not transferable and is not valid for cash or cash equivalent.
If Google Fi determines that this offer is used in connection with abuse, misuse, or fraud, or if the account used to purchase the phone is not in good standing, the discounted amount will be charged to your Google Pay account.
Void where prohibited.
Thanks for doing the homework. That's a change in policy but not unfair or unexpected.
International version. It's different

Is there any benefit of FI over T-mo, considering the Sprint merger? The prices on T-mo seem to be better and you get extra benefits from them directly.

I think it's relative to the number of lines and amount of data usage. The unlimited and family plan pricing on T-mo is better, but if your use case is a single user with ~1-2GB/mo data usage, Fi costs less.

So, you actually have to keep the phone active on Google fi for a whole month before you can switch it to another carrier (e.g. pop in a Verizon SIM or something)?

Disappointing to see this policy being used for motos now. I was looking forward to their 99 dollar bf deal that they do on moto every year
