The HomePod is a gateway drug I to the excellent HomeKit world. Don't do it.
I haven't compared a single Sonos One to a HomePod, but I bought two Sonos Ones for $150 each and a single HomePod for $300 at the beginning of 2019 so I could compare them in my living room, and the two Sonos Ones in a stereo pair were louder, had better separation (obviously), and sounded more balanced and natural to me. The HomePod actually had too much bass for my liking, which might be great if you only listen to hip hop, but the overblown bass didn't sound great for some other genres, and the midrange was kind of lacking compared to the Sonos Ones. So I returned the HomePod. I imagine a HomePod would be louder than a single Sonos One, and wouldn't be disadvantaged in separation any more, but I would still consider which type of music you listen to before calling the HomePod a clear winner in audio quality. Also, the Sonos speakers are a lot more versatile... function as surrounds for Sonos sound bars, work with every music service, can choose between Google Assistant and Alexa, etc.
Excellent sound . Had for around one and half year before it started making popping and hissing sound . Took to apple and they said looks like some hardware problem and since it is out of warranty, we cannot help . This speaker is not repairable . They offered me a replacement for 270$ . Got bose portable home speaker instead and happy with it .

Thank you. Just bought two open-box HomePods for $175 and $185. I also got them to Price Match the one I bought last week for $299. I knew they would go back on sale once I bought one.

The quality of sound that comes out of this thing is phenomenal, the issue was always the premium price tag. Sales like this make it much easier to swallow.

$199 for this level of sound quality in a wireless speaker is a good deal. I have a $299 Bluetooth speaker from Klipsch (I think I got it for ~ $99 from a clearance deal) that I'm underwhelmed with. Just be prepared that a new generation may be released soon.

Seems like the Sonos One outperforms in most categories (voice control, ease of use, price etc) while sound quality is a tad worse. Anyone with real life experience with both?

This blows the one out of the water, in every regard. Sonos 5 sounds better, but the one doesn't compare favorably. I had a one and returned it. The mics aren't great and this sounds exceptionally better.
