I have the SB36512, and have experienced terrible software issues related to sound cutting out. Has anyone owned both and can confirm that this won't suffer from the same issues?

I had the 5.1.2 version before, and returned it to Costco. We got a new x950g for Christmas and the system didn't work too well with the TV. The arc connections weren't communicating properly.
I have had the same exact issues using the SB36512 with the x950g also. I'm hoping that this one will be better since i've read that vizio supposedly fixed the firmware issues with this model.

This is the same sort of thing that I've mentioned before in these threads; home theater systems are often less than they think. See all kinds of deals on bookshelves or in-wall speakers. Receivers do pop up occasionally, but I've gotten some good deals in the past on open box ones. And you don't have to buy everything at once as you were saying. You could even start with a small set of bookshelves and move them to the rear down the road.
I guess some are limited by space or whatever and these sorts of things are good for bedrooms, but even a low end surround sound setup is going to trump even high end soundbars - you can't get good stereo separation in the front from the soundbar (that's the most important part and that's where your ears will be able to detect direction) and no 6" sub is going to go as low as a 12" one (especially not at any volume). And Vizio typically makes flakey products from my experience (have good features/specs but often don't work right all the time or don't last long). This one sounds like it may be an exception though (assuming it doesn't go kaput in one year lol).
The main problem with this recommendation is that you are telling people "spend twice as much and you'll get something better" - which is almost universally the case with everything in life. Sure, if the difference was only $50 or $100 then the recommendation would be useful, but we're talking around $600 for a comparable system and that's buying everything piecemeal and open box receivers. It's just an entirely different situation.

Dumb question, but do you need an AV receiver for the soundbar to work?

No, you don't need a separate receiver for this.

Ordered the 5.1.2 last month for 299.
Getting this for the same price is a steal.
Ordered. Thanks OP Smilie
definitely, nice new and improved from early atmos bar. I've had mine for a few years over ARC with only a few problems, with sleep or I need to refresh CEC on my TCL TV

no it's built in SB.

I've had it in Google Home home audio mixed up with other smart spkrs. Plenty of inputs and advanced sound, my 5.1.2 remote sort of sucks. You have to have the right shaped room for atmos. I have vaulted ceiling but kept it anyway.

Hi all - can anyone help me out/offer advice? I'm fairly new to the whole Home Theater stuff. Would this be a good purchase for my media room? Or should I go a different route/consider something else in the future? Totally lost so could use anyone's help!

More details:
I have a small media room that is approximately 15ftx15ft square shape. It has 12 ft ceilings.

It is pre-wired for a 5.1.2 setup.

Here are some pictures of what I have available in the room:
Attached image (HT1) - 2 wired rear speaker connections to the ceiling (at the 12 ft height)

Attached image (HT2) - I have Power & Connections that route from the top of the TV (I'm guess a TV is supposed mounted above these)

Attached image (HT3) - The connections from the top of the TV are running to the bottom and there is wiring for amp/sub/etc (I'm assuming).

If anyone could suggest if this Atmos bar would be a good purchase, please let me know. How would I mount the rear speakers - since I am prewired for the rear at the 12 ft height, can I mount them up there or is this system not really designed for mounting at that height.

Ty in advance!

I haven't had issues with this. Returned my 5.1.2 from woot last month and bought this for $500. No regrets.

This system is not meant to be wired up high. The atmos in this system is an upward firing speaker on top of the sound bar and the back speakers. Since your room is already prewired for atmos I might recommend just looking into buying a receiver and speaker system separately if you have/want to spend the money. It'll run you probably around $600.

Thanks. So to clarify, you experienced firmware issues with the sb36512 and are no longer experiencing that with this model?

👍 try it for yourself. Worst is trip to Costco on their generous return policy. Thats why I tried vizio again, can't find an Atmos system at $500 let alone $300.
