Now a Netflix original series!
The Witcher, Geralt of Rivia, becomes the guardian of Ciri, surviving heiress of a bloody revolution and prophesied savior of the world, in the first novel of the New York Times bestselling series that inspired the Netflix show and the hit video games.
For over a century, humans, dwarves, gnomes, and elves have lived together in relative peace. But times have changed, the uneasy peace is over, and now the races are fighting once again. The only good elf, it seems, is a dead elf.

Geralt of Rivia, the cunning assassin known as the Witcher, has been waiting for the birth of a prophesied child. This child has the power to change the world -- for good, or for evil.

As the threat of war hangs over the land and the child is hunted for her extraordinary powers, it will become Geralt's responsibility to protect them all. And the Witcher never accepts defeat.

Andrzej Sapkowski, winner of the World Fantasy Lifetime Achievement award, started an international phenomenon with his Witcher series. Now, look out for The Tower of Fools, book one of Andrzej Sapkowski's Hussite Trilogy, coming in October 2020!

This is an amazing series, especially if you've played the games. For reference, this is the recommended reading order of the books:

- The Last Wish (short stories)
- Sword of Destiny (short stories)
- Blood of Elves (beginning of novels)
- Time of Contempt
- Baptism of Fire
- The Tower of Swallows
- Lady of the Lake (end of novels)
- Season of Storms
Personally I loved it.

One thing to note though is that it's really the third book in the series. It's often labeled as the first and I have no idea how they got second (maybe publishing dates?). But you'll definitely want to start with The Last Wish and the Sword of Destiny before starting Blood of Elves. Blood of Elves is the first in the main saga, but the other two are collections of short stories that give some really important background (and in my opinion those short stories are the best part of the series)

Am I the only one who thinks it's dumb to discount book 3? I would've purchased had this been book 1, and started reading the series... But maybe I'm just being whiny.

I recommend the audio books. The narrator does a pretty damn good job.

I enjoyed the short stories. After those the quality fell off. By the last two books I just wanted it to end. It should have been a stand alone novel but was dragged out into multiple books. Also, the audiobook was terrible. I got the last book in audio because I was going on a long drive. It was comical at first listening to the narrator do Ciri and the unicorn's voice. Then it became unbearable. The unicorn voice was ridiculous. It was weird listening to a grown man attempt a young girls voice. Ruined the immersion.

Unless this book is much better than the Last Wish, I guess I will be the lone dissenter and say the writing is just ok, definitely not great. And this coming from someone who loves this genre, and the game. I read about halfway through "Wish" and just stopped, which disappointed me greatly. Really wanted to love these since right in my wheelhouse as it were.

I recently finished this book -- it was the first Witcher book I've read, though I'm familiar with the games. Fantasy isn't really my genre, unless you count weird fiction, and I thought it was solid, particularly first two-thirds (the latter third was a bit middling; maybe he needed a better editor).
