The history of artificial banana flavors is really interesting:

Basically, artificial banana flavor doesn't taste much like the bananas you get at the store, because the artificial banana flavor is substituting for a type of banana that isn't grown anymore.

Interesting. I thought you were going to draw a parallel with vanilla extract, which as a child, I drank some of hoping to get that delicious ice cream taste. Lo and behold, it tasted nothing like that frozen treat.

It's also pretty common in home-brewed wine and beer.

Very interesting read and reps for posting that!

I am not interested in actually buying Banana extract, but I do buy vanilla extract (and others) so I was curious enough to open the thread.

According to the amazon ingredients this extract is through natural flavoring and I was curious if the implication is that synthetic (lab) created flavors are still used in products like these since they have technically nature roots (chemically)?

You might have gotten a slight buzz thought! I have returned vanilla extract since it smelled/tasted nothing like the original thing, but ymmv depending on the potency of alcohol.
