It's dated for sure. But my favorite game ever.

The graphics might be dated but the themes and storyline are more relevant than ever!

Me too. Mafia remake is coming out too. The music was amazing in Deus Ex
Is the original Mafia still worth playing? It was the one game I really wanted to play back in the day but never got around to it. Frankly, I want to play the original version before I touch the remastered version for nostalgia sake because I remember looking at screenshots and videos from the early 00s and hyping myself to buy it at that time. I'm worried it will be too dated gameplay wise to enjoy if I didn't experience it beforehand.

Same! I also have the ORIGINAL version, including the fake newspaper insert and stuff like that from the original release.

I also have a tattoo of the original Deus Ex symbol, because that's how much this game meant/means to me.

I'm going to keep it firmly in nostalgia territory, don't want to ruin it with a replay. I remember it being immensely fun and deep, but buggy as all get out. Probably the depth was relative to the time.
Having lived through that era, it was unlike any other game out there at the time. Half-Life was huge in a sense it didn't break you into cutscenes, but this was next level with a changing story based on how you played. I specifically remember being blown away when characters reacted differently/dying or living when I started a new game after beating it.

Greatest game of all time, in my book. The idea that you could take out major story-based characters at different points in the game and that would actually change the course of the game and your future interactions. That blew my mind.

Re-watching the opening cinematic while in the midst of an actual global pandemic, crazy.

You will like it. I play it every two years but never played the sequels. The cinematics are awesome. Environment is amazing. Cars actually are slower to resemblance the period but get faster as you get better cars. Love that game. Definitely my top three games of all time besides original Warcraft and Roller Coaster Tycoon. Would've ended up at NASA if not for hours into those games

I still play it once a year. It holds up. The GOG version is really good too.

I loved playing this when it came out, and still do occasionally, but after playing HR and MD with their superior gameplay it's really showing its age. I'd love a remake with the updated engine.
You should look up Deus Ex: Revision.

It's a user-made mod and I've been playing it for the past couple weeks. It is free on Steam [steampowered.com] and GOG [gog.com] but you still need to have the original game to play. I highly recommend it for all Deus Ex fans. nod

Great deal for the people who love this game, but need a Gog copy.

For those who haven't played it, I HATED this game. Oh, where to start, and how to be brief about it? Basically, you can play any way you want, as long as it's stealth. And stealth totally sucks because, again, you can play any way you want. That is to say that it's got a million ways to play it and they all suck, but stealth sucks the least. But it still sucks. You've got a cattle prod that has limited ammo and is nearly impossible to get anybody with. Or you can use the tranq gun, which works by--I kid you not--shooting them, then they run around like a chicken with its head cut off alerting all the other guards for a few minutes before they finally drop.

Ok, it's also like a survival horror game in the sense that everything is super limited. The whole game is about managing with super limited resources. The game gives you some fun toys to play with and then punishes you for using them. Nothing regenerates by itself. Everything is really limited. I hated that aspect of the game.

It's also an RPG, which means everything is based on hit points. This means that nothing feels realistic. Instead of shooting a guy with a gun and getting what you'd expect from shooting a guy with a gun, you get a reduction in hitpoints, which totally breaks the immersion for me.

And while we're on the subject of guns. Nearly every gun sounds like a pea-shooter. The effect looks like a pea-shooter too. I had this misfortune of playing Far Cry (1) right after beating Deus Ex, and the freaking PISTOL on Far Cry packs a far bigger punch than any of the weapons in this game.

No offense to all the people who love this game. I'm not questioning your choices. You're all still wonderful people. I just can't fathom what you see in this game, and I want to warn anybody who may be looking into this game for the first time.

Holy cow. I had zero interest in this deal because of it's age, but this makes it viable again. I didn't know this existed.

Thanks!

This GOG version comes with Deus Ex: Revision, downloadable through the launcher. DE:R is a community patch/mod that cleans up and adds higher res textures and models, GUI, and generally spruces up the game. It's worth another playthrough with DE:R.
Revision is available for Steam too. I just picked up DE GOTY and DE IW for Steam for 97c each on Fanatical.

Haha, I tell myself something similar when it comes to my relationship with gaming and my youth.
