I agree, this is expensive. But is the M3 model on sale? This chrome book should also run AMAZING in 8 years from now.
This current "sale" price on the i7 Slate should have been the original retail price. It definitely didn't merit a $1600 retail price. And again, this is coming from someone who purchased the OG Chromebook Pixel. This being Slickdeals, this price just doesn't come across as a good deal.

The m3 Slate is currently available on Amazon for $454 [amazon.com], though I would still consider that price too steep without the keyboard.

Had the M3 and it didn't support x265/hevc, not sure if the i7 is the same (might be a Google royalties thing)
That's odd. Both the M3-8100Y and i7-8500Y are listed as having Intel 615 HD graphics, which supports h.265 up to 8k (4:2:0), so it should have more than enough oomph to drive this screen. Royalties shouldn't be a factor, as the decoder is built into the GPU.

Not doubting you. I'm finding plenty of people reporting the same problem on Reddit. Just saying it's odd. Maybe an early hardware problem on Intel's side that gets fixed with a BIOS firmware update?

So this thread is about a Chrome book, I was always talking about Chrome books (Chrome OS)... not Chrome the app. Sorry it confused you so much.

I also don't think I would be in the "vast minority" if you ask the experts regarding" what is the easiest device for someone who is old and does not know much about computers... it seems the Chrome book is always the first choice. Every article I have read

So, I have a ipad mini... it has not been supported by Apple, I can't even download Youtube... it give me the error message "OS is not supported". Now you can side load youtube but it is complicated and time consuming.

I know of two students (in two different school districts) that were not provided Chrome Books for school bu the school and teachers recommend a Chrome Book (not Android or Apple tablets) for school work. I do think that if you are under financial hardship the school would provide you with a device.

So, my Ipad story. I got my mom an ipad about 3-4 years ago. She joined a book club and reads one book every 3-4 weeks for this club. Last time I went to visit I noticed that she has been paying $29.99 per book, I looked up the books on the Kindle and Google Chrome store and they cost between $7.99 - 11.99 a book. I just feel Apple FLEECES you (definition of Fleeced - Obtain a great deal of money from (someone), typically by overcharging). OK, now I have apple buyer remorse twice, once for my ipad mini which they made obsolete in a day and the other is them FLEECING people... what gets me is that people like you don't seem to mind.

If I knew more about Chrome Books, I certainly would have gotten her a chrome book today.

OK... you want to talk resale market? OK, I own a Hauwei Medipad M5 and a Hauwei Mediapad M3' both were purchased when they were both first released. Release date for the M3 is about October 2016 and the release date for the M5 is a little under two years. The M3 can be sold on Ebay for about $150 (paid $235) and the M5 is about $250 (and I payed $260). Point is, it depends on your device. Even the fire tablets have decent value if you bought yours during a blow out sale.

SO AGAIN, nothing beats a Chrome Book for ease of use, longevity and security updates. But yes, it is geared (IMHO) for a certain user who does most of their stuff online such as web surfing, checking your email, etc...
Your post is quite misinformed, starting with the fact that your "articles" are likely windows vs chromebook comparisons.

I put my mother and my father in law both on an HP Chromebook many years ago because of ease of use and supportability, and at the time, lack of competitive pricing from Apple. ChromeOS / IPadOS is a very different conversation.

If you compare this slate pricing to an ipad pro, they are competitive. The ecosystems are comparable on pricing, despite your book example (google books and kindle content can be consumed on ios devices, thus it behooves apple to be competitive on media pricing - and they are).

As someone who has PM'd mass deployments (3000+) of chromebooks, ios/macos and windows devices in both edu and commercial enterprise (and now happens to work for one of those three companies), I'm not just sharing this from a few limited personal consumer experiences.

Again, lots of options for folks, so use what works best for you. They all have their place. But to say that ChromeOS surpasses Macos/ios in usability is not a widely held opinion. Google isn't known for their polished large screen UX.

OK... my mom is not computer savy enough to buy kindle books and read them... she is use to the ipad cause that is what we gave her.

And APPLE IS NOT competitive with book pricing despite the what you say. I saw... book after book... NOT competitive. CHECK IT OUT YOURSELF.

I have said Chrome is Easier to use... I never said what works better. I am talking about ease of use... Chrome Book rules.

Does anyone know how to access network share drive/file with this? My samsung phone can access share drive but my slate cannot.
You can get the Secure Shell App for ChromeOS, and mount the share by either FTP or SFTP with a a simple username@192.168.0.xxx if the shared device your connecting to supports ftp or ftp over ssh.

Another alternative is to grab an app from the play store. I use MXplorer on my phone and chromebook:
