One of the cheapest prices I've seen so far for a pack of 50 + sold & shipped by Walmart.

Any word on quality or standards? I'm seeing exactly similar masks in ebay... many of them label "medical surgical mask" while a few others labeled "non medical" Can someone help enlighten me on the differences?

Looking at the way people wear masks gives me no confidence at all!
Masks under the nose, around the neck, pulled down or manipulated every other minute.
If they aren't being used properly, they're increasing the risk of infection.
The nose thing doesn't make sense to me. I tried putting mine under my nose — at home — to see if it's a comfort thing. But it was far more uncomfortable like that. I don't get it.

Lowest price since pre-COVID-19. Bought it when they were $15 for 50 a few weeks ago, which seemed like a good deal then.

Order another item that is free store pickup that pushes you past $35. You'll get the masks delivered and after 7 days if you don't pick up the other item you'll get refunded.
thanks for the tip

Are these the kind that are effective if you wear them on your chin or wrist?
The ones that are effective for wearing on the chin have "Summers Eve" printed across the front Smilie

I think in most country, it need to pass certain standard before they can put the word "medical" on their product.

So if they have the word "medical" but didn't list the standard it meet, likely it is fake product.

Standard like....
  • Medical Face Mask ( China standard YY/T0969)
Basically this is a BFE (3.0 Microns Bacteria Filtration Efficiency ) >95% Mask. It is most likely a 2D flat base with 3 layers. Basically this is considered as a regular face mask that both US and Europe has higher standard requirement then this.
Other test standards go along with this mask will include:
GB/T 15979 for one time use hygienic standard. GB/T 16886 for In-vitro Cytotoxic, Skin Irritation /Sensitization (ISO 10993)
  • Surgical Mask ( China standard YY/0469 )
This mask standard is a bit mood because it is BFE > 95% and PFE ( Particle Filtration Efficiency ) > 30% only. Which doesn't match another standard in the US or Europe. But it does include the fluid-resistant test and the flammable test.
  • ASTM F2100 Level 1 2 3 (USA Standard)
China only has Surgical Mask which is only 30% PFE and F2100 Level 1 is 95%, Level 2 is 98% and Level 3 is the same with hight fluid resistance. So you are highly unlikely to find ASTM 2 or 3 in the China market unless they are US-specific factory.
  • EN14683 and EN149
Europian Standard use their sharp to different the two standards so EN14683 is basically the Medical Mask with no PFE filter just like China YY/T0969 . has Type I, II, III and representing 95%, 98, 99% BFE. And EN149 is the cup sharp respirator with PFE over 80%, 94% and 99%.
  • Surgical and Non-Surgical
The Europian standard surgical fluid-resistant represented by Type R at the end. For example, EN149 FFP2 Type IIR is basically the same as Surgical N95 and GB19083–2010 Level 1.

Prior to COVID these masks were $4.95 / box of 50. If you were buying hospital quantities they were $2.85 / box of 50. They topped out at $50/box. Hopefully appreciating the current point on the price curve can guide your purchasing decision.

To improve sealing and reduce leakage, here is a DIY, How to use 3 Rubber Bands to convert a surgical mask and improving the sealing and filtration efficiency close to N95.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVjGCPfRwUo

With their study, it show as long as you can avoid talking a lot using this method, with ASTM standard for Surgical Masks, F2100, it can greatly improve sealing and filtration efficiency that may pass as N95.

https://medium.com/@fixthemask/la...59dbb926a3

Right now, 3-ply ASTM F2100 surgical mask cost around $30+ per 50 masks on ebay right now. Other 3-ply surgical mask also works depend on quality and what standard it meet (Example: only ASTM Level 1 and above will filter 95% of 0.1 micron particles.
China Standard YY 0469 masks only filter 30% of 0.1 micron particles, and European Standard EN 14684s do not filter 0.1 micron particles at all).

https://www.businessinsider.com/d...fit-2020-6
An ex-Apple engineer is helping combat the N95 mask shortage with a simple solution that anyone can make at home with rubber bands
The project intends to address the shortage of N95 masks by helping people create a brace for ASTM-grade surgical masks that makes them more effective by forming a tighter seal around the face.
When the University of Iowa's Carver School of Medicine tested the fit of the mask's first iteration, all 12 participating physicians wearing the brace passed the hospital's required fit test, Paseman said. Fix The Mask has also been working with the University of Pennsylvania to test the fit.
After she dissected an N95 mask and did some research on the filtration material inside, Paseman realized ASTM surgical masks that are modified to fit more tightly can offer better protection — making them the next best option for those who cannot access N95 masks.

This is a great deal. The auto parts store mask deal was also great. Anything that gets you close to 20 cents a mask is great. I've been buying all kinds of masks since January. Mostly from Alibaba. Lowest I secured was 31 cents each (I include delivery). Any mask is better than no mask. And we have been using these with our cloth masks over. It reduces the amount of washes the outer cloth masks need and provides an additional layer or protection. If you want a better mask they exist. Just be prepared to pay more than a dollar a piece. But mask science says multiple layers help. Even a cheap cloth mask with pantyhose wrapped around to eliminate leaks can be better than not so up to you if want to wait but masks will be scare for the foreseeable future. I live in what used to be the epicenter for the US and I live in the epicenter of the epicenter. I find it curious when the CDC says wear at least a bandana that people are good judges of mask quality. here's a tip. Unless they are not (real) or real NIOSH approved surgical/clean room mask- all the masks are the same. maybe color or construction but they are all at least 3 layer made with non woven fabric. If you need masks (and we all do) get some.
