I'm using the app, and from the link I don't get an option to choose used. Only options are 3', 6' and 9'

I understand it is the principle for the deal-addicted rather than practical but I don't get the wisdom in buying open box items to save a couple of dollars. Optical cables can be damaged in many ways in handling which may not be evident on just inspection and I don't think Amazon warehouse actually plug each one in to test them.

If it is a $100 item that you wouldn't likely buy/afford at that price and it is offered at say $80 that is within reach and worth taking a risk with a decent return option, I understand.

Sometimes, I think many SDers would jump at a used condom deal to save $0.25.

The regular price for a comparable cable would be not much more than this. Just don't go to Best Buy for such cables and think this is an extraordinary deal.

Yes, I know shipping costs but there are ways to manage that at Monoprice.

How to get free shipping @ Monoprice?
The easiest is to combine small things with something else you need that has free shipping. If I just need one thing, I wait. But more often than not, if I am buying a few things, their shipping is reasonable enough ($3-$5 for small items) that combined with their lower prices, it is still cheaper than buying them elsewhere including Amazon. Note that Monoprice itself prices it much higher when they sell on Amazon.

Sometimes they have cheap stuff in their clearance section with free shipping that is cheaper than the shipping they would charge otherwise and you get free shipping on the whole thing by adding it. For example, recently thay had iPhone cases for a dollar free shipping. I added that to a few cables I needed and so effectively, I got what I needed for $1 shipping. I have done this many times even if I don't need that clearance item to reduce overall cost. As long as that FS item is priced below what the shipping would cost you without it, you come out ahead.

The way their website works, a free shipping item gives a credit upto $X (they don't stack, it gives credit for the heaviest FS item) depending on its weight. So, you put the FS item in your cart and you can keep adding until that credit is exceeded. Even when it exceeds, you still get that $X credit so you still land up paying less than without that item added.

If you are looking for one cheap item now, it may not work. I was just giving that as an example of how much these cables are really priced at to say why this is a crappy deal for an open box.
