Some will say go for timbre matching with brand components. And that's fine too. I just go with what you feel is better for your allotted budget. Buy both, test them, and return the ones you don't like. But don't sleep on this deal.

I guess this is a dumb question but if you want a 7.2 system, these would represent the 2 rear? Or the 2 middle surrounds? Or you can buy 4 of these for surround and rear? Or?

I am not an audio expert but the recommendation for this speaker is that you mount where there is a wall that bounce back the audio, mainly as middle surround. I have this as rear for my 5.2.2 and it is ok for rear mainly because one side do not have a wall to reflect the audio and speaker is not exactly behind my seat. I paid $399 with $25 AMEX CB which is available right now on some accounts
Well actually these are not designed to "bounce" the sound like say a object based module is. This wide dispersement is more suited for a "middle surround"(side surround). If you use them as rears might be best to put them right in the corner where a wall won't interrupt that dispersion of the sound.

Their design does not make them ideal as object based speakers also.

Doesn't mean you actually can't do it since this is all subjective.

I would agree "Buy both, test them, and return the ones you don't like" is the best practice, keep in mind that you are comparing two very different sounding speakers.

If you have a system 7.2.4
You can put
7 speakers
2 subwoofers
And 4 Atmos speakers

If you see X.Y, X is the number of speakers (i.e. two front towers + center channel + rear surrounds = 5 speakers... a pretty typical 5 speaker system. Add in side surrounds and you're at 7. Add in height or wide speakers and you're at 9). Y is the number of subwoofers (typically just 1 or 2).

If you see X.Y.Z, the same applies as above... and Z is the number of unique Atmos / overhead speakers. I believe the most Atmos you can have, for the most part, is four.

Are these bi-pole or di-pole (or both)? I am guessing these are bi-pole.

Oh noes i forgot about the 4 speakers you need to put on top of your mains and rears to make it atmos compliant.

Kinda want to know just how much better a 5.1 system with 5 speakers and a sub woofer sounds against these new abominations that have 11 speakers and 2 subs...

Everything is inphase so it would be considered a bipole. Could just take one side apart and flip the polarity to make it a dipole. Some other manufactures have a switch for that.

Would they? Yeah. Would they do it well. Not really.

If the 703s ever come back in stock at anywhere near this price point, you'd be much better off getting a pair of those.
