Multiple reviews say the sound is incredibly bad if you don't use the ANC function. That's enough to put me off - the are just times when I need to hear what's going on around me.
I think they sound better with ANC turned off, the sound is a bit hallow with ANC on for the lack of a better word. Using a phone with Bluetooth 4.2 they sound noticeably better than my other cans a Sony MDR-XB600 plugged into the headphone jack of same phone.

This one or Q20? Primarily I would be using it while mowing the lawn. Q20 is available on Amazon and Newegg for $49.99
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NM3R...8Eb6ZHDD4S [amazon.com]
If you are going to use this outdoors while mowing the lawn please look into wind noise performance. Esp if wind is an issue where you live. I found this out the hard way when I bought a sony on.ear2 XM900N. The ANC exaggerated wind noise so much that it was worse than not having any headphone on. Then I found out that sony's phone app had a "wind noise" mode. Turning that on make the sound much better. I still traded up for Sony WH1000M3. After 6 months of use I have no regrets. The sound and ANC quality is quite good on those. WH1000M4 is supposed to be released soon but it does not appear that it has improved significantly on those two key areas. I understand that these are different brands, and different price brackets. So be kind - only trying to help here.

tl/dr look for "wind noise" in the amazon feedback comments before purchasing if that is your primary use-case.

Also look into products that are purpose built for noise isolation like https://www.amazon.com/3M-WorkTun...B0723CYHPZ These would dampen more (24db v/s <20db for Anker) across a broader spectrum of external noise. I have not tried these, but if my sony had not worked out, I would have gone to these next.

These are my go-to headphones. I wear them to workout every day. Sound great and battery lasts forever. It's never once told me it's anything other than high. Lol
I love mine too, only issue I have is that there's no mute button which is super useful during long phone meetings.

I mean to be perfectly fair, pretty much all wireless headphones are closed back anyways, meaning that the passive noise cancelling will still hinder your hearing, anc on or not.

That's obvious - the issue in the reviews was that the sound quality degraded significantly without ANC on. I checked on another pair I bought previously and worked well (just not the most durable) & found a coupon for $15 off that brought them down to $25. Tried to post it, but I guess they owe SD money or something because it got blocked.

Better for me on stuff like this then,...as I'm having a field day attaching cheap magnetic chargers to all of this "old" gear at reduced prices and not dealing with either of the USB connections.

Can you point me in the direction of those cheap magnetic chargers?

I was trying to decide between these and the Anker Soundcore Life Q20 just last week and ended up getting the Q20 because the Life 2 weren't in stock at Amazon. I might return the Q20 and get these. I like the hard case that comes with these and they otherwise seem pretty similar.
There's a version of the Q20 with the hard card for $10 more, and it's selling on Amazon now for $60. Or, you can buy the hard case from Anker for $10 including S&H, so it's the same either way. I'll probably get the version w/o the hard case for $50 and the hard case separately, to get the soft pouch to use for something else. I'm waiting till next week when Chase's new 5% categories kick in, one of which is Amazon purchases. Of course the price will probably go back up then.

im sorry but that response just irked me the wrong way. if you need to hear whats going on around you that badly, dont wear headphones. ANC cancels out exterior low frequencies and droning so you can have a clearer audio palate for what you are "streaming" into the headphones.
its like you've never heard of open headphones.

you know that sound a sea shell makes, its not great, cup your hand over your ear, sealed headphones have to fight bad sound.

can you explain so i can understand a little better? i don't[and never] claim to be a headphone expert. if not, no worries. i thought the microphones in the ANC gear was to eliminate the seashell effect as well as outside droning.
