Connecting laptop and desktop to 2 monitors and 1 keyboard/mouse

665 52 June 22, 2020 at 09:31 AM
I am looking to connect my work laptop and home desktop to 2 monitors and share the keyboard and mouse between these 2 machines. I am currently using a KVM switch and am able to use the laptop and 1 monitor while my desktop which has 2 display ports uses both monitors when switched on with the KVM. Is there a device which is an integrated KVM switch and dock which can let me do what I want to do?

Thanks

Three options come to mind.
1) Buy a USB switch. It's like a KVM switch but just for USB.
2) Use software like barrier debauchee to share your keyboard and mouse. It'll allow you to move your mouse between both computers as if they were one computer.
3) Buy a logitech keyboard and mouse that support logitech flow. It'll do the same thing as option #2 but I think it's windows only.

There are two utilities that can do this for you by allowing you to connect your keyboard and mouse to one system and move the mouse seamlessly between the two.

Mouse without borders is free but only works with Windows

Synergy is a cross platform utility and a bit more advanced the MS tool but its not free.

Actually, Synergy 1 is open source and free (but doesn't support encrypted traffic). When they went closed source and started charging, barrier debauchee forked Synergy 1 and continued development (supports encrypted traffic).

If I remember right, the original Synergy didn't play well with Win10 either. It's been a while since I used either tool but I think the problem with the old synergy was that it wouldn't work on the lock screen.

If OP wants to give it a shot, it's available at Sourceforge.
