Has anyone planted garlic by using just mulch? I am tired of digging. Figure if I just use much to cover, I don't have to dig during harvest.
Try to plant it in a pot. I agree garlic is tough to dig. I planted in a garden bed and I struggled to pull it out.

anyone have luck getting weeds to stop growing on TOP of wood mulch? I think rubber mulch works a bit better. But even with round-up, these things will NOT stop growing.

How much is the 2x 20lb Kingsford?
Don't see it in the ad but eyesight is bad.
Edit: oh, the link goes to ad that expires 24 June, not the new ad.
Edit again: found it in the pics... still 16.88 which is 42 cents/lb... not slick... hoping Labor Day is better.

I can get a cubic yard of mulch for 40 bucks at my local rock yard and it's good shredded bark style, not this cheap spray painted wood chips with nails thrown in.
If you have a trailer, do that and stay far away from the bagged crap.

I picked up the Kingsford on Saturday. Great price for 40lbs of charcoal, at least hear in Los Angeles where Vons charges $18.99 for a 16lb bag smhFrown

I always chuckle when I see neighbors get multiple pallets of this bagged stuff delivered.

This cheap mulch, despite it being "Premium", is not very shredded and contains large pieces. I think the finely shredded mulch looks nicer in landscape despite the extra cost.

Yes spray pre emergent on top of mulch. Like prodiamine.

Read the reviews. 100% Total garbage. Filled with mold, mushrooms, and weeds. The local lowes worker told me that raccoons actually get into it and eat stuff out of the mulch bags!

Im still trying to get rid of the mold/fungus from it from last year. It started growing up the trees and I had to wash them with dawn soap. FYI if your not happy lowes will let you rebag the mulch and return it or offer you free fungicide to spray everywhere. Stay away.

Agreed, this is a huge problem. Hand weeding from the top of the mulch is a PITA, and sometimes pre-emergents will kill everything nearby, and are a bad idea unless absolutely necessary.

I have had some luck using a multiple player approach: first layer, use tons of brown cardboard (not color or printed), next layer, use weed block fabric (note that the fabric you can buy at landscaping professional stores will always beat big box, HD, or Lowe's, as it is much, much thicker), then the top layer is the wood mulch.

As a maintenance method, I use a vacuum mulcher instead of a blower or rake. I have one that has an adjustable vaccum intake speed. I set this to try to suck up weed seeds and lawn clippings that get caught in the mulch. This delays breakdown in the bed and less opportunity for sprouting seeds.

I top dress with new mulch every so often and I get a few years out of it using this method.

I hope this helps!
