I listened podcast today, WSJ money mentioned that many travel annual fee credit cards offer different perks for their paid customers due to less travel during the pandemic. I have the Amex gold card, annual fee is $250. I tried to call Amex to see if they have any offers.

A nice rep didn't mention that they offer any perks, but he put my on hold for a few minutes, and came back to told me that his supervisor is willing to refund the $250 annual fee!

Maybe you can also try it! It is not a guarantee. Please be nice when talking to Amex rep. Good luck!!

Call them and specifically ask what your retention offer is. Sometimes it's cash, sometimes it's points. Mine was 30,000 points. I explained that I'm not using most of the benefits now and was just being upfront with them. Ask for your retention offer. No guarantees though... It's all just generated by the system, the rep doesn't have any control over what it turns out to be.

Highly YMMV and depends on your relationship with Amex and spend. I got 20k pts or $150 after 2k spend

I closed my Amex gold account very recently due to less travel, they did not even mention any retention offers. My account is in good standing, it might be a factor of the specific CS

You have to ask for the offer.

When accepting a retention offer, does that lock you with the card for another year?

Not only does it lock you in, the rep will specifically read you T&Cs about the consequences of taking an offer only to cancel within the next 12 months. Your Membership Rewards may be seized and accounts shut down if Amex determines you're trying to scam them.

I spoke with American Express today and they told me that the retention offer is not available until the annual fee has been charged and the retention offer is only available for 30 days after the annual fee has been charged. During the 30-day window after the annual fee is charged you have three options. 1) accept the annual fee 2) ask for retention offer and accept if offered 3) downgrade the card to a no annual fee option and they will refund the fee.

So basically you have a magic 30 day window in which you can utilize your options. Don't call American Express too early or too late.
