Kaplan ASVAB Prep Plus 2020-2021 Free on Amazon Kindle

ASVAB Prep Plus 2020-2021: 6 Practice Tests + Proven Strategies + Online + Video (Kaplan Test Prep) [amazon.com] is currently free on Kindle. It looks like it may be for "Army National Hiring Days" (June 30-July 2).

I know my son's school uses the ASVAB as one of their career placement tests, so it's not just for someone joining the Armed Services. The book includes access to Kaplan's online system with extras (videos & practice tests).

It doesn't look like any other e-book shops have the book free (it's $21 at all of them).

For those that had the same question I did; had heard of it but didn't know precisely what it was:

Sorry, I assumed most people knew what the ASVAB is...but of course that's not true.

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery is a test supposedly designed to categorize your interests and knowledge in order to better place you within the various Armed Forces. Every recruit takes the ASVAB, and the scoring sort of determines for what jobs you "qualify."

It isn't perfect, and it is geared toward military pathways, but it has its uses. As I said, my son's school uses it to help determine where your vocational aptitudes (hence the name) lie. It helps guide the students toward careers (or at least education toward careers) that might be a better fit than just saying "I think you should be a doctor,he should be a lawyer, and they should both be organ grinder monkey performers...."

I scored in the 99th percentile when I took it about 10 years ago.

It's a relatively fun test that adapts to your answers.

If you are planning on enlisting (or have kids who are planning on enlisting), PLEASE, PLEASE do yourself the favor and do some prep. Your recruiter will not prep you because you recruiter probably DGAF, and this single test may be the difference between 4+ years as a truck driver vs. 4+ years in intel, medical, IT, or anything else that will prepare you for a successful transition to civilian life.

To expand on the above, this is essentially a placement test that scores you in a bunch of different knowledge areas. Different MOSs / jobs have different requirements in each of the areas. Wheeled vehicle mechanic likely has a higher mechanical requirement than public affairs, which likely has a higher 'General Technical' requirement.

If you're going into the military, go for it. If you're using it for "career placement" I doubt it will be useful for you to "prep" to see what your aptitudes are; that just seems counterintuitive.

I had to take this when I joined the army. My job choices were combat medic, combat medic with nursing attachment and a nuclear technician? I ended up doing combat medic w/ nursing.

Useless test and waste of time, unless you want to be in the military.

Curious, what 99th percentile yielded you? I assume at that level you choose (to be a pilot, or similar)..

Did you end up enlisting? I didn't. I also had 99 percentile.

My recruiter helpfully told me that I should never tell my coworkers my score once I've enlisted.

Enlisted cannot be pilots, thats for officers. If you score high enough it will open up every available job for you to choose from but the list will only be jobs where there is a need for manpower. Have not seen a requirement for any job higher than 85.
