Trying to hold off for a better deal on these 13" or the 16" base model closer to 2k in near future.....
16" base is $2079 at micro center if you are one.

Need expert advice, this or Windows? Purpose is mostly study related (I'm joining this fall, might use applications related to computer degree). Still debating if I can survive with Windows or need a Mac?
if budget is an issue, go with windows. Otherwise if you can afford it, mac will make your life easier.

however, all school related CS work can definitely be done on window, you can defiantly survive with windows

Or look at the actual specs. 500nit, color accurate 16:10 screen. Amazing speakers. Amazing battery life. 4 thunderbolt ports. Yes even touchbar, which I hate but still costs money. There's more to specs than just the CPU.
I agree 90%. The 10% that I disagree with is the touchbar -- I really dislike the touchbar and hate that it is bundled up with the laptop itself. There is no non-touchbar MBP that I can see being offered now (hopefully, Apple would listen to customers' opinions -- to which they have to a certain extent and offer a non-touchbar version in the future). Point is... consumers are paying a premium for something I would never use. Charge me the premium, but put that towards more RAM or more storage instead.

I would pay more to not have it lol. I just meant it's an item that costs money. I take your point tho: it adds no value.

I bought the lower end model, but it was on sale for $1299 tax free Wink

1.4 ghz, 8gb ram, 512gb ssd

No regrets, the 10th gen isn't that much better, only the graphics.

Just be mindful that after 5 years of this mac it will be increasingly frustrating given the transition away from x86. You only have to look back to the previous transition, the PowerPC users were left in the dust very VERY quickly.

The $1799 model in Space Gray is now available at $1649. Lowest was $1599 at Best Buy but you may come out cheaper by saving tax at B&H. I think it is likely to see price drop to $1599 again in the future, but if you're set on this model and don't want to wait, can still be a good buy now.

I was about to pull the trigger on 10th gen model and backed out due to apple switching to arm chips. I right now have 2014 MBP which I think will work for another 4-5 years. It's difficult to digest the fact that after spedning $1700 you may not get OS updates on after 2-3 years.

It depends what kind of software you need and for what major. For instance some software doesn't have native mac versions (like 3d slicing Netfabb - not a college example but work example but still)
So running something inside Mac in virtual machine or parallels or other crap is pain in the ass. But if you will be like. web dev and all you need some virtual machine dev env you could do it on either machine, as a matter of fact you can have "windows" machine with Linux installed instead of Windows.
Some programs, like MBA, have their own laptops that you get form them with discount but this way every student have literally same machine and they can support them. I think Wharton back in the day was giving peeps 2 configuration of ThinkPads...

Anyway, see what you will need ON your laptop, maybe ask someone who already on their last semester?

Windows if you plan on gaming at school (dorms and class) while coding when you have to, like most of us have.

You should be able to manage and troubleshoot a Windows machine especially if you are a CS major.

You can use Virtual Machine to run Apple and Linux OSs as well so you wont lose anything.

I prefer Macs for photo and video editing but you didnt say thats what you would be doing.

PS. I am not an expert but I did stay at Holiday Inn last year.
Thanks, I don't do gaming for sure, just study stuff. I was was hoping I could do some photo editing (not a pro either, just learning) with this machine.

This is $100 cheaper than the edu. If you want the ear buds then perhaps they are comparable. Ive read the discount on the applecare should be considered.

For me im waiting on my states tax free weekend in a month + edu (if best deal at time) for mbp16 but same logic could work i think for a 13. Also the apple store gives more options for upgrades without having to buy within a package.
doesn't tax free weekend usually exclude electronics?

Our state lists computers as eligible.

Or by Windows 10 machine for 1/4 the price with the same specs
My current MacBook Pro has lasted fine and we bought it 11 years ago. All I had to do was upgrade to ssd and upgrade ram. Never had a windows laptop last longer than 3-4 years before it was ready to go in the trash.

Agree, I think this is "regular" price now, however some people may be able to save tax with B&H.
How would you save tax with B&H if I live in a state where tax is mandatory?
