Airpods are pretty trash, bought a pair as a gift with no wireless charging case for $140 and compared to my own galaxy buds that I got for $100, they're really bad. You can't hear people unless you talk loud on calls with the mic, and the fact they charge a premium for a charging case LOL galaxy buds came with that no questions asked. Yes I used each headphone on their respective devices (iPhone 8 and Samsung s10). I was greatly underwhelmed and disappointed in their performance.
I've been using my AirPods for daily phone calls that I run for nearly 2 years and not had any issues with needing to speak loud or anything. My experience has been very different than yours.

Batteries will last about 1-1.5 years and then they start to crash hard. They're also not replaceable. I'd never buy airpods again

I've had them for a year and a half - paid around $160 in Amazon.
Battery life is still around 5 hours. I almost never hit the limit because after a few hours they are usually back in their charging case.

I have jogged with them, and they don't fall off (but the fit is a bit loose).

The only annoyance is that occasionally 1 of the buds complains in iOS as not working (red icon). But it has always worked fine and charged fine. It happens around once a month.

I think they are a bit overpriced, but the convenient factor won me over. They sound just like the $30 buds that come with your phone. Which means perfectly fine, but nothing to write home about for the price.

Second annoyance is they get confused if two devices that are paired with it are in use and in range.
For example if wife is on iPad and I am on the phone a few feet apart and I grab them sometimes they connect to the iPad which is further away...
that said this is a problem with most Bluetooth auto pairing devices.

Edit:
Since the AirPods Pro have been hitting $220 on Amazon and other places, I think those are worth considering paying the extra $70 over these. They add the noise cancellation, better mic, better sound quality and better fit in your ears.
The other thing I like better is that you squeeze instead of tapping on the buds. The tapping works 70% of the time, but it's a loud tap noise in your ear.
All this to say I guess is I would buy the pros if I had the money right now. For extra $70 it solves some annoyances and improves the experience.

Thank you. That was really helpful. About connecting issue, both devices have same iCloud account?

No, two different iClouds, but we have sometimes watched movies together in that iPad....
