I teach 4th grade, and this was a little too advanced for my average public school student. Not one kid who checked it out stuck it through and finished it.

As a parent, revisiting some old favorites at bedtime (Phantom Tollbooth, Narnia, etc) and discovering new ones with my soon to be 7 and 6 year olds, this was a little too dense. I second the comments above placing this at a higher reading level. I'm looking forward to it, but we had to shelve it for just a couple more years. We replaced this with Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH and the first sequel and the kids loved those.

Check the reviews on Amazon . There are many complaints of poor quality book binding and uneven pages.

Not to bad. Reading at all and 2+2=4 is to advanced for most high school graduates here Md. You are a little ahead of the curve.

Any other recommendations similar to Mrs Frisby and Tollbooth? My nephews are around 7 also and they're just getting started with the longer chapter books. I am The One and Only Ivan, Silverwing series are two books I'll introduce to them as well.

We stick to the classics for the most part, and sometimes it's a little hit or miss. They got into Harry Potter's first few books, but right now I'm reading the first Percy Jackson book and can tell they're not into it as much, they really enjoyed Charlotte's Web (be prepared to talk about death and life), and while it's a different type of series, they love and devour the Dog Man books and The Bad Guys, to the point where I'll find them reading them on their own.
