Is this about as cheap as it'll get for chromebooks (aside from the non-touch posted above)? I haven't been following this type of product in years but now will need one for my daughter starting Kindergarden in the fall. It's kinder, so I assume it basically just needs to be able to do Zoom. I'm considering a cheap chromebook or maybe even a 10" tablet would suffice. TIA for any advice/suggestions.
Anything cheaper would start giving up things like the 1080p or touchscreen. or you get 2gb instead of 4gb or you get a mediatek processor or 32gb instead of 64gb. This is the cheapest you can go and get all the main boxes ticked off. I'm sure it will still feel a little cheap, plasticy, and screen brightness might be a bit dim. I'd consider one but I still have my Acer R13 that's holding up fine.

Walmart has warranty options at the time of purchase - $50 for 2 and $60 for 3 years. It's kind of expensive, but may be worth it if the laptop is being used for kids schooling this fall.
I don't think warranties protect against those kinds of viruses.

These are pretty indestructible. The schools mostly use Google classroom, so this will integrate well. I would go for this over a tablet
Actually, three years back when my first daughter tablet died,I thought of getting another iPad or Samsung tablet, but her teacher informed us that they will be doing everything in Google classroom for $50 more I bought Samsung good quality tablet since that day, she has been using her Chromebook for her school work and as tablet and much more than tablet since it's come with stylus she is doing her drawing project and then I did the same thing with my second daughter. Just make sure when you buy the Chromebook it should have touch screen and not more than 12-14" max.
We don't have any tablets now.. End of tablet era.

Don't know much about chromebooks. But I do know that newer ones can run Android Apps. Is there any way to run WhatsApp on these for video calls? I hate having to settle for video calls on a tiny phone screen. Just curious

Would this laptop be sufficient for surfing the web with multiple tabs, watching online videos, and playing movies via hdmi?

Beside the price, what's the logic behind buying Chrome over a laptop (which can do more and has bigger hard drive)? This chrome weights over 4 lbs which seems heavy for every day carrying.

I don't use What's App but I have a Chromebook 14 and installed a few Android Apps on it.
The only catch is Chromebook 14 does not have a touchscreen so any app that requires a touchscreen would not work. (it depends on the app, some apps can be used with a mouse) Also if my kids login using school accounts then Anrdoid Apps cannot be used (likely due to school administrator set restrictions).
So if the app does not require a touch screen and if you login with a full Google account(not school account or other restricted account) then it should work fine in most cases.

*Just to clarify. The $229 model here does have a touchscreen so it should be able to run most Android apps.

Definitely can recommend chromebooks for those who aren't super tech savy and just want to browse.

Do they owe you anything? Sorry to be blunt. This is a 279 dollar chrome book and 50 off is about 18 percent off...try asking Apple to do this on their line who have much heftier margins, or even Surface books..

This is a great price for a fully featured chromebook.
there is a reason a $50 discount on chromebook isnt even comparable to a $10 discount on apple products. get it?

Parents should look into this. New school year is most likely to be distance learning. And you don't want to wait until school start to look for a tablet/chrome book, by that time the price would be jack up because all parents are rushing to get one.

Basically what the guy right before you posted: Web browsing, watching online videos or movies, with a 1080P touchscreen and decent battery life for $230.

You'll never get a virus or a blue screen of death. Or have to wait for Windows to boot up or to install updates.
Also the Chromebook works fine tethered to my T-mo 4G prepaid phone, whereas my Thinkpad has no chance.

They're different animals and it's not, IMO a Replacement for a full on laptop with a hard drive. They're definitely not for everyone.
Do you want to take the Mini out for a spin or do you have to daily drive the soccer SUV?
