Got this exact model as an access point to add coverage to my existing Verizon Gateway router in a 1200sqft apt, works wonderfully! My internet plan is Fios Gigabit 1000mb/up and down and this maxes out at around 65 to 75 MB/s when downloading games on steam on my laptop with an Intel AC 9560 chipset! My mom and I both have 11 pros for phones and they max out at 850mb/s up and down on Fast.com speed test FWIW.

If you're getting this as a router, I'd look at something in the $250-350 range but if you just need an access point to add in combination with an existing router this would be great!

Totally agree. I have x1 real 68u, x2 ac1900 converted to 68u's and an old 56u converted to a 68u and has been going strong for over a year.
But I still lurk on all wireless router posts.
I envy all of you who are so knowledgeable about networking. I don't know what Mesh, QoS, etc. are, but desperately want to improve my WiFi coverage as I have a gigabit plan. How does one know if he has a WiFi 6 device?

FYI

I bought a similar model (ax1500) recently and ended up returning it. Constantly would drop 2.4ghz and 5ghz was laggy.

My recommendation is get a mesh system, like Orbi for instance. Easy to setup and great coverage. If you have the budget, opt for a system with WiFi 6

I also bought the AX1500 and it has been a terrible tragedy. I constantly have to reboot and sometimes it just kills the 2.4GHz band for no reason.
Must have been a dud, I returned a Netgear because of this and this AX1500 has been rock solid.

I didn't know about eero or mesh until this thread. I just looked at the eero products. How do people get past only two LAN/WAN ports on it?

If you got the money and know how, I recommend ubiquity. A step up from that would cost about 4K. But most people do not need that. It is expensive with more information than what you need. Search for moca adapters and wired your house.
If you have the know how and are on a budget, get a router that runs OpenWRT. Regularly updated, extremely configurable, powerful, and reliable.

Exactly the 68u works great and works great in a mesh network with similar Asus routers.
what about the merits of moving from the 68u to the newer 86u for about 100 bucks.
