The screen is not mediocre, it is pretty color accurate display. The display brightness is mediocre, only 250 nits.
True, colors are decent, but I personally would take a 300-nit office-oriented blue-tinted display over a 250 nit display with perfect colors. Brightness is so important at these low ranges. 400 nits is often too bright for indoors, but more often than not (for me) 300 nits is barely enough for most indoor settings.

I picked up an Asus Zenbook UX31a back in 2012. then upgraded to a XPS 13 in 2016.

The UX31a still has >50% charge, is used regularly by my wife, has survived my wife (unlike her phones) and has taken drops like a champ. drops so hard, there's an actual dent on the side of the aluminum case. Everything is original on the UX31a.

Meanwhile, my XPS 13 9350 I am on my 3rd battery, had to swap the wireless card to get functioning bluetooth, literally a half dozen AC adapters later, still has sleep issues.

I have been waiting for the UM425 since it was announced and am ready to give Asus another go, because if it's anything like our trusty UX31a, then I probably will still be satisfied with the laptop 8 years from now.

Just gotta hold out for the 1w screen!

First decide why you need the Laptop for. Legion 5 is a heavy gaming laptop with dedicated powerful Graphics and weights almost 2 lbs heavier than that and short battery life. This is an extremely thin and light Ultrabook with no dedicated graphics but better battery life. It's liek asking whether you need a Truck or a Sedan....depends what you want to with it.

with this AMD processor+graphics, this should really go for 2K res screen
price is kind of on the high end of budget laptop side?
Wholeheartedly disagree. The Vega 7 doesn't handle AAA titles at 1080p on high/ultra settings. And it is only a 14" screen. 1080p is the optimal resolution for this unit and 1440p would render text small by default, making it problematic for some applications on Windows unless most of use will be design/media editing, which doesn't appear to be the target auditioned for this unit based on the screen.

why would A* titles matter? I didn't look at this laptop as a gaming laptop and it doesn't look like this laptop is being marketed as an A* titles playing gaming laptop

Ultrabookreview.com just posted the review of this exact model, check this out.
https://www.ultrabookreview.com/4...ia-review/

The Display goes 277 nits at max. Below are the details of the the 250 nits screen: -
  • Panel HardwareID: CEC PA LM140LF-3L03;
  • Coverage: 95.5% sRGB, 69.7% Adobe RGB, 72.2% DCI-P3;
  • Measured gamma: 2.31;
  • Max brightness in the middle of the screen: 277.50 cd/m2 on power;
  • Min brightness in the middle of the screen: 17.43 cd/m2 on power;
  • Contrast at max brightness: 1154:1;
  • White point: 7600 K;
  • Black on max brightness: 0.24 cd/m2;
  • PWM: No
.

As per the review, Asus has targeted this laptop for more of a day-to-day use laptop with silent fan profile and it performs lower than the other 4700U powered laptops, especially from Lenovo, due to Asus being very conservative about the TDP Limits. While Lenovo ones can go 25W easily and up to 40W during load, this just goes up to 25W during load for a very short time an then throttles back to 15W TDP limit.

Pasting my reply that went into the wrong thread a couple days ago:

I'm a Mac guy but had try Ryzen laptop. So fast. The screen discussion is insane. I turned the brightness down and used the "reduce blue light" mode to lower the screen blast. I am coming from a MacBook 12 inch and an XPS 13 before that.

The Zenbook is really bright. I've never had trouble with laptop screen brightness. I've also never been sitting outside with the sun at my back, using my laptop.

I just had to RMA this one because it refuses to wake up from sleep. I have to hold the power button down for 10 to 15 seconds and then boot it back up every time it falls asleep. After two reboots, the cursor disappeared and on the third reboot, it reappeared. Two reboots with the Wi-Fi adapter missing and now it's back. I rolled back from a Windows update without success. Praying that the replacement lives up to its potential because this thing is really cool for $900.

Caveat:I am a premium-only laptop user who is upset that I can't get something unibody or all aluminum with Renoir

This is not "sold out", it is "back ordered" now.
They are still accepting orders.
They say they can ship in 2 to 5 days.
Anyone got the order after back ordered?

So it looks like on some Aussie sites, there are some availability dates ranging from 8-28 thru 8-31.

On some German sites, the model number with a 4700u and a 400-nit screen is UM425IA-HM032R
Of course model numbers per region can vary, but there's some additional info for some tangible products. Worried that we may not see certain revisions in the US, though....
