Does a CR subscription give me access to their online site for 13 months as well?
Check your library (or any library you can get access to) for online access

Library? What's that? Is that old people's Google? I have only heard of Google. Just kidding.

Thanks for the suggestion, will check out the library. Can't beat free access.

Can anyone comment on if CR is still relevant and helpful? I use The Wirecutter frequently and wondering how it compares to that.
I used to use the Wirecutter, but their quality has gone way down since getting acquired by the New York Times. Even some of their very quantitative reviews like for noise canceling headphones took down the charts for older models like the Bose QC35 which go for under $200 on sale now and would make a great budget pick, yet it doesn't even get mentioned and top marks go to the very expensive $300+ Bose 700.

CR has archives, so you can go back in time and see older models that used to be top picks and are still very good.

Generally, the Wirecutter's system of only going into detail on a couple top picks causes them to rule out too many competing products for rather arbitrary reasons. I would definitely always read the competition section and research them more on other more dedicated websites. I usually end up buying a competition item they ruled out rather than the top pick after doing more research.

The Wirecutter is basically just the starting point when you're doing product research.

Thank you! Really helpful perspective. I have noticed a degradation in quality but couldn't quite put my finger on it.

On a somewhat related topic, since I have a much busier life these days I have noticed that I tend to always end up buying the first thing I get "excited" about for products and after exhaustive research often times just come back to that original item. Because of this I go with my first instincts to save time rather than do the type of extensive research I used to do.
