nice, mods reversed my warning. So keep an eye on the Tello blog, they often follow up with a new offer. https://blog.tello.com/ I think I have a pretty good spare back up plan now, $5 every qtr for data only and paygo balance for voice. Thanks everyone for the tips, I can keep one phone going while the extra accounts are being closed from inactivity.
How do I emulate what you mentioned - $5/quarter and Pay as you for a voice ? You are using Tello $ to pay for the $5 and pay to top up I am assuming.
I need a similar plan for my grandmas very rarely used number ?

Is your Grandma's line new to Tello? If you port in now, while there is not a special going on, I think your best option is: use your account to refer the new account for your grandma and purchase a $20 pay-as-you-go credit. Data is 2 cents per mb, calls 1 cent per min, texts 1 cent each.

Then, in 3 months, use 5 of Tello Dollars to purchase a 500MB plan, then cancel the plan so it does not renew. She will use that data plan for the month and texts will be free, but calls will continue to come off her balance. Then, in another three months, use the remaining $5 to purchase the 500MB plan. So, you end up getting 9 months of service for the initial $20. After that, you will have to pay by credit card or paypal for a plan every three months to avoid expiration. It will take attention and some calendar reminders because you can't set up any of the purchases automatically.

yeah, we need to call it the Grandma Plan, just right for light users. I don't use much voice so 1c/min goes a long ways and 500MB lasts with wifi everywhere. I'm no expert but like Shannon said, I just cancel plan and then repeat every 3mo. The line will default to paygo when no plan is selected and sort of a hybrid when Data Plan is used. They haven't figured out a way to stop grannies yet.

Here are the paygo rates. https://tello.com/rates/pay_as_yo...d%20States so a $20 refill will get you one or the other

United States 2000 min/$20
SMS 2000 texts/$20
Data 1 GB/$20

Thanks for explaining in details. It seems there is no way around an initial investment of $20. However $20 will get me 9 months of service.

Thanks. The cancellation needs to be done near the end of the 90 days or can it be done any time during that period and the valid through date stays as is ?

Can someone explain to me how Tello works on the $5-$6 plan with data and talk?

Can I add more talk minutes as I use them? Or can I buy more during the month if I use all the talk minutes?

If I understood correctly, the data will slow to 2G or slower once used up, but this should be fine for just reading emails. Do I need to have the 500MB plan first, or will the talk/text only package give me the slow data from the beginning without choosing the 500MB plan?

I need 2 lines for the grandparents, both only need to read emails. Using Sprint historically tells me that 1 line uses about 50-100 talk minutes monthly and the other uses about 400-700 talk minutes each month.

Slow data only kicks in if there is some data plan that is used up. If you are on pay-as-you-go, it charges at 2 cents per MB off the balance. You asked about "buying more" during the plan, the two options are (1) use a pay-as-you-go balance for anything in excess of your plan or (2) renew early, which essentially starts a new month. Since pay-as-you-go minutes are 1 cent per minute, I find it a better value to just use minutes from the balance instead of having them on a plan.

Also, if you manually renew a day before the plan automatically renews, any unused data/minutes will roll to the new month. My daughter is almost always in wifi, so doesn't use much data. She is on the 500MB/month plan which includes free texts and her calls come off her pay-as-you-go balance. I renew her a day early to roll her data. Also, by manually renewing, I can use Tello dollars to pay the $5 for the month instead of having it go to her credit card.

So maybe I should buy the $5 500MB plan for both lines (the phones are iPhones, but they still drain random data... but they only really need email), but use the $0.01 pay as you go for talk/text? If so, can I use a shared pay-as-you-go balance between both lines?

Unless they really don't need data at all, then you might be better off just using the balance for all their usage.

Just saw your other question. They do have a new family plan, but I have never used it, so I am not sure about sharing the balance. It might be worth a call to customer service. Also if you buy the 500MB plan, texts are included so the only thing coming off the balance would be calls.

Thanks for the help.

Can I mix and match the $5 500MB plan and pay-as-you-go talk? I think that's what you said about your plan.

Yes, that is exactly what my daughter is doing. $5 plan for 500MB of data and unlimited texts and she uses her balance for talk. I renew her one day early to roll her data. At one point, she was over 2GB that had accrued, but since then, she has been out of wifi quite a bit. Once her accrued data got low and I knew she would need more data than usual, I renewed her for $10 for 2GB. Then, next month, I will switch back to the $5 plan.

I ported in to Tello a few days ago using my old Sprint sim. Since today I am getting only 3G data. It used to show 4g LTE the first week but then I have been mostly on wifi so not sure when it stopped working,
I have already tried the standard troubleshooting instructions such as reboot, ##72782# but none of that helped.
Is this a known issue with Tello?
The device is originally a Google Fi device (unlocked) and then used on Sprint for a year and no problems happened during all this time.
