Best monochrome printer by far that I've ever used. Blows everything else of the water. Blazing fast print and duplex system. Very quiet and super compact. The unfortunate thing is in the m404 HP has decided to restrict ink to its verified chips so aftermarket is much more expensive than the 402 I have. You have to take the chip off the old genuine cartridge and put it on the new cartridge to keep printer operation with a 3rd party cartridge. Super annoying but that's what the future holds I guess. If you can find the 402 anywhere buy that thing because it's the last perfect HP LaserJet ever made

We have 5 of the 402dn printers and they're fantastic.

If I need a printer just for printing amazon return labels, would I qualify for free ink via HP program?

No, instant ink is for qualified HP inkjet printers. This is a laser printer that uses toner cartridges.

I don't own one at home, but I have used around 100 of these in the last couple years and they are solid.

I don't understand how this doesn't blatently violate the Magnasum Moss warranty act and anti-trust laws.

I mean at least Impression Products, Inc. v. Lexmark gave back some power to the consumer. Lexmark was trying to sue those who used remanufactured the cartridges and the court stated that once something is purchased the manufacturer cannot sue for patent infringement even if you are in breach of the items contract. I think that they can make the cartridges more secure and hack proof but the consumer has every right to circumvent the system after purchasing a patented product. Needless to say thank god lexmark is mostly nonexistent now. They are a tiny fraction of what they once were. Good riddance

HP Laserjet printers are one thing I almost always buy refurbished on eBay. I've bought a dozen or so of varying models including the 402dn over the years for my work and never had any issues. These dealers usually replace all the rollers so it's usually only cosmetic blemishes and those I can live with.

What about this one? Is it good for a generic toner?

Yes this one will work great! It's definitely on the pricey end compared to how much it was before it was discontinued but if you print a lot of pages the ink will be super cheap. I get a 2 pack 26X for $40. Each cartridge lasts about 10000 pages for me. Plus unlike the Brother machines you replace the drum when you replace the toner so it's not an extra expense. Also look into the m426 if you want scanning. It uses the same cartridge and has the same speed

Thanks but I am wondering if this is overkill for my home needs. I print on average 20 pages a day and scan once or twice a week. I have a laserjet 1018 purchased like 10 - 15 years ago and it still works like a tank! [ This is why I have such a good view on HP printers]. However, it doesn't have scanning capabilities so I am thinking of getting a spare printer/scanner. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks for your time and input.

If you need black and white only get a HP Laserjet M426DN or DW based on WiFi needs (DW) or if you have Ethernet (DN) or the Canon ImageClass MF424DW or Canon D1620. Note that these machines use exactly identical cartridges and print engines since Canon develops this specific line of laser printers for HP. They sound the same and even use the same duplexer technology. The HP m402 also uses this same Canon engine. The pro about the Canon is it has the 3 year warranty versus 1 year on HP. It's personal preference on which machine you think looks better and which application and driver works better. If you have any questions about other models I can try to see what I know from my experience.
