Before anyone calls this ObamaPhone, note that this program came into being during the George W. Bush administration. It's a great deal obviously... Even more generous than a $10 plan at Tello or Boost. Perhaps a bit too generous for being free.
I'm not sure actually if you're talking about a more specific program, but the Lifeline program actually came into being in 1984 under Ronald Reagan. Although it would seem logical that the cellphone program came into existence under Bush, it's still an extension of a Reagan-era initiative. Of course, the president is ultimately a small part of the equation in the modern era for these federal agency initiatives. The "Obamaphone" meme in 2012 was obviously stupid and stems from some viral video of a woman urging people to vote to reelect Obama because "he gave us a phone" and called it an Obamaphone (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpAOwJvTOio). It's sort of ironic that the term came to be used (inaccurately) as a derogatory byword for government subsidies to low-income people, but actually seems to have started as a term being used (also inaccurately) in an affectionate way by low-income people for government subsidies. So whether you hated Obama for giving free phones or loved Obama for giving free phones, your sentiment was misplaced.

How are you getting the 2 Gb bonus? I thought the 5GB in California already includes the bonus(standard is 3GB)
No, the std. CA plan now has 5gb of data, so call to complain if you or someone you know is not getting it.

I think they said I was getting an extra 2gb because of longevity, so I get 7gb total... 5gb shows on the plan info, with the extra 2gb on the details/usage display only.

How is it possible you might ask? The cell carriers are passing this cost into PAYING customers by jacking up below the line fees on service, YES even prepaid will see higher USF and REGULATORY RECOVERY FEES as a result. The fees are in part why I cancelled OOMA VoIP. Every other month, up a few cents...
just wait till you find out about the multiple wars going on and their pri\e tag

My mom Assurance Wireless just successfully port-in from LANDLINE number of Spectrum. It took less than 48 hrs to complete. But it took 97 minutes on the phone with numerous transferring to different agents from this supervisor of a department to another. Be patient to provide the same information over and over again, she lost count how many times but at least 6 agents.

And she was doing that while waiting for a new Free replacement phone still in transit that just came this afternoon.

Assurance Wireless will do the same, but up to 7GB (in CA at least)... 5GB in CA, plus you may get the add'l. 2GB bonus in CA, at least.

FYI, AW belongs to T-Mobile now, and I can't wait for the push-over to GSM from CDMA for the former Sprint/Virgin Mobile carrier service.

My mom with Assurance Wireless has only 3Gb and needed to go into the account settings to get bonus 2Gb for total of 5Gb a few days ago. She just got a new replacement phone UNIMAX U693CL after porting her landline into AW so I guess 5Gb total is up-to-date: should we call to ask for 7Gb?

Yes, if you're in CA, call to get the 5gb/hotspot plan, and see if you can still keep the 2gb promo.

This is what I have, and the state covers it all under the federal & CA lifeline plan.

Are you able to use hotspot?

Her Unimax U693CL can't have USB internet access, WiFi for contents only. We don't have Bluetooth device to try yet.

BUT we needed to call them to activate it.

We did connect to the cell via WiFi but no internet access and after calling CSR they checked her account and will activate that feature on the next billing cycle. And after looking at her account they also raised the limit from 3 GBs to 5 GBs because we live in CA (she didn't ask about it, just one thing at a time). So now the total of 7 GBs can be use for hotspot/tethering, nice.Smilie

bump, Safelink should be even better under VZW ... https://www.prepaidphonenews.com/...ns-to.html
As of this writing, there is little we know about how the acquisition will change things for Tracfone. But Verizon says that it has plans to "further develop" the "core brands, products, and distribution channels" owned by Tracfone. In addition to this, Verizon plans to continue offering the MVNO's Lifeline service, which would allow qualified customers to get a free phone and minutes every month.

The acquisition is expected to be finalized in the second half of 2021

Beware: I would strongly advise to stay away from Q link. I gave them my contact info (during sign up) and within 2 weeks I'm receiving scammer phone calls saying I have warrants for my arrest and that the Social Security Administration is after me. Uh no. Stay far far away from Q link. Ugh, I'm usually so diligent too. Ugh.

they probably gave you some crack heads recycled phone number. Has nothing to do with your info in that case. When that happened with others you could get a new number for free.

No. The phone number I gave them as my contact info during sign up, is what they gave out.

sorry to hear that. I only know about qlink from CL buyers of my R+ phones. My vote is for Safelink, it's been very good here and well established.

There is no tax on food (that you buy in a grocery store).
Why type all that when you could have just said "there is no sales tax on groceries" Which, I might add, is incorrect since 7 states DO tax groceries.
