The lack of HDMI 2.1 on this 'refreshed' model is a bit concerning as well as a lack of the VP9 codec support from YouTube on their 60FPS 4K which is surprising to me for Androids flagship streaming device. I'm curious to know how this compares to something like the 4K Firestick as well... sideloading apps at least still seems simple enough via ADBLink with this guy. Reviews on the detail improvements over standard HD streams sound impressive so long as you have an HDMI HDR cable with at least 22.38 Gbps bitrate compatibility.

The nVidia Shield is the best streaming device ever made. It is as close to perfect as we are likely to get in a consumer device. I use it every day (even right now). Highly recommended if you like movies, TV, and games. The more you dive into its features and available apps, the more you will get out of it.

Check you streaming channels if you're thinking of getting one. Roku still has a few more streaming apps designed for it the the shield.

Anyone using Plex with this? Can it direct play full bitrate MKV over the network with subtitles on? Without transcoding at the server? Looking for something that can do this as my Roku can't direct play and requires transcoding.

depends what source codec/bitrate you have, 1080p or 4k?
mkv is a container, not a codec

you're still planning to use nvidia shield pro as a plex client right? (connecting to a plex server somewhere else?)
just fyi, shield pro can act as a plex server

Got it for 199 to run TinyCam as an NVR for my EufyCams which support RTSP. So far handling 3 HD streams recording 24/7 connected to ethernet (a few hiccups here and there).

Was also finally able to retire my Steam Link. I do notice a ton of lag playing via Bluetooth on my PS4 controller though, it works fine wired with a data USB connection. The shield handles UHD gaming versus the Steam which only handles HD. Of course your network and your system will affect quality.

Also finally able to access HBO MAX since those idiots still haven't put it on Roku.

Roku remote can also control the Shield with CEC connection, though some functionality is missing.

Still prefer my Roku interface for every other function, though.

I have a Roku, 4K AppleTV, FireStick4k and a chromecast. Is this thing worth getting?

What are some benefits? I've been wanting to do the steam streaming games from my PC to my TV, but the devices I have now struggle with it. May be more my network, I'm not sure. This thing good for that?
THE BEST AIO media player for all the streaming services ( this after owning over half a dozen Chinese no-names before). I've had this model since January & provided seemless connections to Netflix, Hulu, Disney plus, etc. Menu system is simple but robust. Icing on the cake is the TRUE FULL 4K 60HZ HDR support. Gemini Man @ 120hz was astounding. It's pricey but worth it.

The 2017 version just got an update that upscales even 480p to 4K. Doesnt look amazing but its much, much better. The fact that Nvidia pushed this update to its 2017 models says alot about the company. They didnt have to and could have just pushed the update to its latest model to make people want to upgrade.

I will forever support Nvidia Shield cause of this. When my craps out I will get whatever new version they have as well as continue to recommend it to people.

I bought the Sheild some two years back since then, my Roku is collecting dust, its not stick its Roku 4 player.
Roku is good, but no Bluetooth support, plus few other shortfalls make it less desirable to me after I started using Sheild.
I connect Keyboard and Yamaha Sound bar using BT and its awesome.

I'm playing 4K HDR mkv flix on this puppy without a hitch. I can also connect my Bluetooth headphones for privacy viewing (great for action flix) during nighttime.

I used it to replace my Steam Link, among other things. This can do 4k streaming assuming your network and your PC can handle it, my Steam Link can't.

It has a Steam Link client as well if you like that interface (they have their Gamestream app which is fine but it won't let me turn off/restart the host computer when I'm done gaming). The Steam Link app can do 4k as well.

Main problem though is there's a persistent lag with wireless controllers, especially on my PS4 controller. Playing wired (with a data connection, not just a micro USB cable that's charging only) solves the problem for me. From what I've seen online there's no fix for it.

I've heard a recent update made the 4K upscaling even better. It can somehow even upscale from 480p.
I have the old one and the major update was upscaling to 60fps when it can. Didn't read anything about 4k but may have missed it.
