$10 off retail isn't much, but I've been waiting on it to finally drop from full retail price.

Auto 4K upgrade on YouTube videos after the update, much better viewing.

Nvidia claims better visual/video gaming performance on its Android games, after the firmware update... but I never tried.

The 2017 version just got an update that upscales even 480p to 4K. Doesnt look amazing but its much, much better. The fact that Nvidia pushed this update to its 2017 models says alot about the company. They didnt have to and could have just pushed the update to its latest model to make people want to upgrade.

I will forever support Nvidia Shield cause of this. When my craps out I will get whatever new version they have as well as continue to recommend it to people.
that's good to know, I fire up my old one hoping for something good. Still doesn't do my ATT TV app but it did add Duo and video cam support for big screen video calls. It is fast but I still think HTPC is the king of the hill.

Is the new version worth the upgrade from the 2017 model?
The 2017 version has a fairly good resale value still. If you watch a lot of 720 or 1080 sources on a 4k TV with mediocre up-scaling, the AI upscale on the Shield is so worth it. I have a Vizio Quantum with a great picture and terrible up-scaling. I had a 2017 with game pad that I think I sold for $150 on FB marketplace. I paid full price for the new version back in Jan so it was like a $60 upgrade after taxes on the new one. Totally worth it for some amazing up-scaling.

The lack of HDMI 2.1 on this 'refreshed' model is a bit concerning as well as a lack of the VP9 codec support from YouTube on their 60FPS 4K which is surprising to me for Androids flagship streaming device. I'm curious to know how this compares to something like the 4K Firestick as well... sideloading apps at least still seems simple enough via ADBLink with this guy. Reviews on the detail improvements over standard HD streams sound impressive so long as you have an HDMI HDR cable with at least 22.38 Gbps bitrate compatibility.
The 'lack of HDMI 2.1' is NOT CONCERNING since that version is for 8K, & I strongly doubt that you have an 8K tv to require HDMI 2.1.

Anyone using Plex with this? Can it direct play full bitrate MKV over the network with subtitles on? Without transcoding at the server? Looking for something that can do this as my Roku can't direct play and requires transcoding.
I play 1080p 10bit, 60fps MKV videos with no problem. It also plays my 4k video content from the Lumix G9 camera with no issues. Great device, aside from it now crashing my video player after update. Great device, just the fcking price is overblown vs what many of us got for the 2017 version ($120). But good deal since many are selling these for well over $200 due to lack of availability.

Got a 2017. 2019 model marketing claims an "up to" 25% faster Tegra+ processor, but benchmarks don't show any statistically meaningful improvement. The 2019 model is desirable for supporting Dolby Vision HDR, Dolby Atmos surround, and the 4k Upscaling (from 1080p content) using AI tech.

With high demand from people staying home, eBay used prices are averaging about $160-$170 (sometimes the same price as this deal, rarely lower than $160), this is a decent deal. They were even out of stock and unavailable for awhile.

I bought a used 2017 version because I didn't want to wait, for $140. It's a bit scratched, didn't come with any remote (this 2019 model comes with the new remote that I would prefer over the 2017 version anyway). The processor/graphics is basically a Nintendo Switch with a higher clock speed... even with the performance on par with the 2017 and 2015 model, it's a powerful beast, one of the most powerful android devices and the most powerful android TV streamer full stop. Amazing native Android games, and some PC games were ported to run natively on the system.

Wired with Ethernet into my router, GeForce Now is incredible, with a great gaming experience on my cable internet that provides higher quality visuals than my PlayStation 4 Pro. I use my DS4 controller with my Shield in Bluetooth mode, works fine. This is going to be the way I catch up on my Steam copies of "The Witcher" series. Caveat: game stores and publishers decided they wanted to pull games from compatibility with the service, so you can't play ANY game from your Steam/Epic/Origin/Ubisoft library. I largely blame Epic. With that said, there is still a plenty large game selection of almost all types of games like League of Legends, Tomb Raider series, Assassin's Creed series, Far Cry series (Crytek engine runs great!), but no RTS like StarCraft II, bummer!!

I also have had an Apple TV for years. This Shield is providing my first taste of 4K content, though I don't have a 4k TV yet it's kind of cool to see the nature videos and walking Japanese cities videos. I can't mirror my screen from my iPhone, but I can use Chromecast to start YouTube, Netflix, or music from my phone and "send" it to the SHIELD. I don't know why Crunchyroll blocks the free, ad-supported tier from being used on the AppleTV (I was previously screen-mirroring Crunchyroll from my phone to the AppleTV... it worked lol, but both screens stayed on and used electricity), but the full Crunchyroll experience works great on Android TV and the Shield. I'm looking forward to getting a USB drive and loading it up with movies and music rescued from my computer and DVDs, and using the SHIELD as a PLEX server to preserve and easily access my media library.

I kind of wish I got the 2019 version instead with wider HDR support and better surround support, and I probably would have bought this deal if I didn't buy the 2017 model two weeks ago. I won't be able to afford a PS5/XSX right when they come out, so for now this is my new game console and media center. Very happy with my purchase.

No really unless you need the 4k up-scaling. Higher price for no remote. As a side note there's a new update that kinda bricked my Android MX Player Pro. It keeps crashing with no file found or exits to home. Fckling annoying.
That's a common issue with Google's Android TV OS.
It also occurs with Sony TVs.
It takes forever for updates to be able for installation and many times the system is glitchy afterwards or features have been deleted.

BF is not too far along. Is it likely that prices on these will be better then?
Next to apple products, these hardly go on sale.. The fact that this device serves the need of multiple audience keeps the demand always high.

Launches Netflix, voice commands, etc faster, smoother operation, better 4k upscaling support than TVs. Gets updates more often than TV manufacturers. May be able to access some Android apps that aren't included on your TV... like Spotify and Tidal, Peacock, HBO Max, etc.

Also, if you have any music or DVDs that you can't get on a streaming service, you can legally rip them using an app like Handbreak (just don't share them, that's piracy!) and store them on a HDD, making them available with an app called PLEX that will let you enjoy that content on the SHIELD or use the SHIELD as a PLEX server to deliver that content to you wherever you have an internet connection. 👍🏻

As good a product it is.. $189.99 isn't low enough. I would wait unless you are impatient. I think they can do better. Great product but overpriced.

You can easily side load the ATTvNow app on any android TV device from:

https://www.mediafire.com/folder/...24queajyev

They just work no modification or location spoofing needed on the latest apk!

PS: you can thank Achilles R32 on XDA for all his hard work on this high bitrate version (better quality streams). I've linked his mediafire above with the APKs.
