$10 off retail isn't much, but I've been waiting on it to finally drop from full retail price.

No really unless you need the 4k up-scaling. Higher price for no remote. As a side note there's a new update that kinda bricked my Android MX Player Pro. It keeps crashing with no file found or exits to home. Fckling annoying.
I was going to buy this to use with MX Player Pro, but that's a non-starter if an update breaks it.

Have you tried reverting to an older version of the APK? I like 1.15.5 instead of bothering to update it

Edit: sending you a pm

Next to apple products, these hardly go on sale.. The fact that this device serves the need of multiple audience keeps the demand always high.
These are in high demand and short supply during the Pandemic. I don't know if there will be Black Friday sales on them about 3 months from now. However, older models in past years sometimes hit $150 or $140 on Black Friday... but that was before it had caught on, the SHIELD seems much more popular now.

Launches Netflix, voice commands, etc faster, smoother operation, better 4k upscaling support than TVs. Gets updates more often than TV manufacturers. May be able to access some Android apps that aren't included on your TV... like Spotify and Tidal, Peacock, HBO Max, etc.

Also, if you have any music or DVDs that you can't get on a streaming service, you can legally rip them using an app like Handbreak (just don't share them, that's piracy!) and store them on a HDD, making them available with an app called PLEX that will let you enjoy that content on the SHIELD or use the SHIELD as a PLEX server to deliver that content to you wherever you have an internet connection. 👍🏻
ok so you pair it with PLEX thanks. LG OLED has PLEX app guess this would be improvement...

Will the new Nvidia Ampere cards coming out soon have any impact on this? e.g. will there be a new version likely?

if anyone who is looking for NVIDIA shield experience (only UI wise) try MI BOX S, which includes chromecast 4k too. It doesnt have all the bells and whistles including the AI upscaling, but it does decent job in terms of media playback and supporting all APK's. Also is officially supported by Google Android TV, which has the exact same UI as NVIDIA shield. Only problem though is the recent PIE update which introduced some bugs, which may or may not get addressed. But for less than $60, one could really try the experience of Android TV before investing $180. as always YMMV on needs

The 'lack of HDMI 2.1' is NOT CONCERNING since that version is for 8K, & I strongly doubt that you have an 8K tv to require HDMI 2.1.
Or for VRR. Like on the LG OLEDs.

As good a product it is.. $189.99 isn't low enough. I would wait unless you are impatient. I think they can do better. Great product but overpriced.
Seems to me like the Apple model of doing things -- it's a quality product, works well, and delivers a satisfying experience, but you do pay more for that. You can cut corners and buy lesser products, but you are more likely to get frustrated by something or another.

I have one of the original shields and it still works great. Amazingly, there are still regular software updates. Can you think of any other Android device from 4+ years ago that still gets regular updates? And I'm not just talking about critical security updates (which ought to be the minimum bar, but many phone vendors shamefully don't even meet that), but updates that deliver actual improvements.

So yes, you pay more, but you get a product that works well and which the manufacturer backs with long term support.

Is the new version worth the upgrade from the 2017 model?
No, with the new software update all of the features are coming to the older models, sit tight. Worst case, just order the new remote direct from Nvidia and be happy. You'd kick yourself if you spent the money. I'm very happy with my old Pro.
