$10 off retail isn't much, but I've been waiting on it to finally drop from full retail price.

I'm in need of an OTA DVR for the theater. I really only need to pause and rewind live TV. I don't plan to schedule recordings. Any suggestions?

If your need is absolutely to play movies with the help of side loaded apps and nothing more , then you are better off with amazon fire tv 4K stick, which does that. Only difference is the AI upscaling which nvidia does which got pretty positive reviews everywhere which you will miss. Again to realize the upscaling benefit your tv must be capable to see that difference. Also it comes to the price point . Spending $35 vs $189 which really comes down to ones use case. There are other nuances like connecting external hard drives, plex server rendering etc etc , which keeps addding up and easily push ones decision to nvidia shield. If you don't see yourself in that list of use cases, better spend less and stay with 4K fire tv stick

Is the new version worth the upgrade from the 2017 model?
yes. 1. the remote is a lot better and 2. the upscaling of 1080p is amazing. 480p isn't that great but blurays look a shit ton better. I bought it and sold my 2017 model for 160 on ebay so it was just 60 bucks to upgrade. worth it!!!!

That's what I currently do with MX Player Pro, just play media, sideloaded it onto my fire stick 4k that was 25 dollars at the time (still goes on sale for 35). Hard to beat it for the price.

I feel that the popularity of the Shield is what's keeping the Fire TV Cube so expensive (not worth 120, got it for 60 from ebay during the best buy price mistake). It only goes on sale for 89-99. Probably would be like 69 on sale though if not for the pandemic. The extra price tag for the cube isn't worth the added processing power (hexacore vs quad on the stick)

It'll be interesting to see what the successor to the fire stick 4k is, but it probably won't come until October 2021 since they skip a year.

The Roku Ultra is due for a true upgrade this year, processor wise IMO, since I don't think they've done anything significant the past 2 years

Then shield is definitely overkill for your need. Shield is a monster which will handle pretty much everything like a champ, and most of the times people prefer shield because they need one with their high end setup like Dolby atmos vision, TV units which clearly shows the difference between AI upscaling vs not, sound systems capable of receiving what the shield has to offer and so on. Another huge factor is the gaming. If one doesn't have any inclination to gaming plus lack of aforementioned hardware setup plus only media playback needs , it's clearly overkill.

There will not be a new Shield in Oct/Nov. Maybe in 2021 but not 2020.

Didn't know they were planning a new release this year. Any sources? Won't come up in my search

My family loves the Shield. We play an occasional game on it, we Plex the crap out of it, Google Live Channels is a great interface for television, HDHomeRun tuner support is fabulous, etc. We love it and it is supported so well by Nvidia. Definitely love supporting this company. They now have a larger market cap than Intel. That's pretty nutty if you think about it.

I have both, I along with some friends have had issues with the newer version heating up, freezes then shut off. The older version work like a well oiled machine with no issues.

I also have both, but neither one of mine has given me any overheating issues.
