I've been looking for a while and this is the best I've found for the 887 driver + 996 hammer drill with 2 - 5ah batteries with a charger and a case. Acme Tools has it for $399.99 with a promotion for a third 5ah battery, but this is still a much better deal.

Not quite the same drill, but the same driver available at Home Depot for $130 each (you would get an extra bag and charger as well if you purchased both)

Perhaps the better drill is the deciding factor in the Lowes deal, but FYI

Hammer drills work as a regular drill. It's a selector switch.

Yeah, 996 drill is a beast and very solid (literally too -- quite heavy, especially paired with a 5AH battery). So yeah, this is good stuff. You want to have something like this around for serious tasks, and then probably one of the smaller lighter ones for simple household tasks.

Yes, that is a good alternative. At this point I don't know if any of us need more chargers. Main thing is that the drill is a different model as you mention -- lighter-duty and not nearly as beastly. Though for some tasks that's actually better (easier to work with, less strain on wrists) but not as powerful or rugged.

As yet another alternative, the drill+driver you link to are also available as a kit themselves for $199:

I actually got the 887 for $130 you linked to, but debating if I should return it for this combo

The price is actually lukewarm. Lowes had the newest power detect 998 and 887 combo with 8ah for the same price less than a month ago. Also came with a fast charger.

I got the same drill/driver with soft case and 2 batteries at Homedepot using the buy more save more trick for 199.

Edit: NVM - it's the 796 drill

I got this set about 2-3 years ago. To be honest, I think the old "Made in Mexico" ones I had were better built. The forward and reverse feels really cheap and loose, the chuck wobbles a lot and gets hot really fast.

In all fairness, it has never failed me and has been able to handle everything I have thrown at it, very powerful as well.

Whenever I see this kinda deal it makes me wish I held off for a deal with the hammer drill instead of the regular one. Not that I paid as much but the hammer drill comes in handy when I'm working on masonry but I know I'm only going to need a few quarter holes bored. Much easier than dragging the Hilti along for the ride
