I didn't know computers were that different 🧐
Maybe not that far apart, but certainly like choosing between a road bike vs a mountain bike.

I'm going rp-17, this is tempting being slightly cheaper, but I use my laptop for gaming and a lot of multitasking, so it's worth the extra for superior performance.
This is my so far favorite AMD Ryzen machine.

i7-9750H I own the S740 Lenovo and it COOKS I'm talking without my fan stand hits 95 celcius just web browsing. Stay away from this processor at all costs I see it all over the net, it gets super silly hot without underclocking. And without the base fan my laptop is unusable. This is even after replacing the fan and heatsink with arctic 5 silver compound. I used service manuals for tear down so I'm 100% either my CPU is garbage or this line of Intel runs extremely hot. If I didn't dent the top cover my first week I would of sent it back... My friend has an AMD (2019) and never runs hotter than 83 and that's during stress tests. Worst mobile intel CPU ever.

It is not the CPU that over cooks a system. Your Levnovo doesn't have great airflow, cooling, etc... Besides that, per intel this CPU can take the heat. I agree it is not ideal, expescially when the CPU starts to throttle due to it's heat. But the point is I blame Lenovo not Intel.

Is the hard drive size a concern? What should I consider when choosing between 15" or 17" screen?

These prices keep dropping and will continue to drop. By 2021 March these will be a lot cheaper.
That's right. And by end of September 2021 they'll be cheaper still.

My Dell XPS has the same chip, and also ran real hot. I ended up just disabling Turbo Boost via the power settings, and seemed to help quite a bit, and really don't see much of a performance hit for general use.

Damn.. Tempted..

Got this to test for 3 more weeks.

Refurbished Omen by HP 15.6" Gaming Laptop, Intel Core i7-9750H, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 15-dc1058wm

But that is the 2019 version. But I paid $ 700 for it which would mean the price difference is $ 437 with taxes.

Differences are:

-Bigger Screen 17"
-Twice the storage 512GB with extra space for another NVMe stick.
-RTX GPU RTX2060

A lot more future proof. Specially the GPU. But not sure worth $ 437.

Future proof (to me) would have been a Thunderbolt 3 port....

Right, but I do wonder if external thunderbolt GPU docks & GPU upgrades will ever be low in price enough to upgrade. But maybe in a few years it will be.

I would expect 20xx series cards to get cheap fairly soon...

Right, RTX20XX GPU's should be a lot cheaper. I am more worried about enclosures or GPU connection devices prices from what I've seen around.

This deal (I can get walmart 10% discount) or eluktronics rp-17 [eluktronics.com] for $1150 with a r7 4800H (self-install windows+drivers) or wait till black friday. I really want 17" and the 4800H looks a hair better for single thread and much better for multi-thread matlab (according to passmark).
Get an Intel CPU so you can use ThrottleStop and XTU.

This is a good deal for most of the specs, but be aware the panels on the Nitro 5 are quite bad. Around 250 nits and 50% srgb. You need to move up to the Nitro 7 or Helios 300 for decent panels.
It is bad on the 15.6" version, the 17" supposely has a better screen.
