Damn.. Tempted..

Got this to test for 3 more weeks.

Refurbished Omen by HP 15.6" Gaming Laptop, Intel Core i7-9750H, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 15-dc1058wm

But that is the 2019 version. But I paid $ 700 for it which would mean the price difference is $ 437 with taxes.

Differences are:

-Bigger Screen 17"
-Twice the storage 512GB with extra space for another NVMe stick.
-RTX GPU RTX2060

A lot more future proof. Specially the GPU. But not sure worth $ 437.
Don't like the HP Omen center hinge design. You got a refurb unit, who knows what the previous user did with the laptop or if there's a previous hardware failure. The Nitro has an additional 2.5" drive expansion. You get a bigger and better screen, i say it is worth the switch.

Right, plan to start running it thru some tests to make sure it is not a dud. I also still got the option to get a 3 year warranty on it for $ 85. Got until the end of Sept. to decide to keep it or not.

The 2019 Omen is missing the second NVMe option. Plan to add a 2TB Crucial MX500 SSD to what ever I keep.

It is the 2019 model so it is the one with two hinges instead of the middle hinge.

Do Acer Nitros still have braindead cooling? As in the vents channeling the GPU's heat through the CPU with both fans located on one side of the laptop?

They have dual fans on each side of the laptop from the Acer site, and some teardowns.

With the unveiling of 11th gen intel CPUs, Big Navi and the new nvidia 3000 series, shouldn't we have a massive clearance or fire sale on current laptops?
That's true...but due to home office/school....demand for laptops is all time high. No matter what...kids need gaming laptop...more so due to Fortnite fallout with Apple.

Yeah BUT it might be offset by the current situation. (CoVid & Increased Chinese Tariffs)

Just got this laptop. Everything looks great but there is one flaw that is driving me nuts.

The keyboard is really bad and low quality. It will not work if you press the corner of the keys. You must press directly on the center of each key.

I have never come across a laptop or keyboard like this before! This is leading to so many typos. Does anyone else have this issue?

Yep. I just bought this the other day since I heard the panels in the 17 inch were much better than the 15 inch model (it is). The keyboard is beyond awful. I've only had it for a few days so I'm not used to it just yet, but after doing some typing tests, I've gone from an average of around 100 or so, down to like 78. It might get better in time but I doubt it'll ever go above 90 with this keyboard. The keyboard is also oddly pushed up on he chassis and you have to kind of "reach" for it. It just seems oddly disproportioned for this size laptop.

I understand this is a gaming laptop but is it powerful enough to run Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020?

I know very little about computers, but my brother-in-law wants to get a gaming laptop to play that game and from what I understand the recommended minimum requirements to run (smoothly) are fairly high.

Is the video card in this laptop powerful enough? He wouldn't be looking to upgrade again for several years and this is likely to be the only game he plays. I did try to recommend he go for a desktop for cost reasons and the ability to upgrade components easily down the road, but he seems to be set on a laptop.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 Requirements: Recommended configuration to play the game

CPU: Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X or better
RAM: 16 GB
OS: Windows 10 64-bit
VIDEO CARD: Radeon RX 590 or GeForce GTX 970
PIXEL SHADER: 5.1
VERTEX SHADER: 5.1
FREE DISK SPACE: 150 GB
DEDICATED VIDEO RAM: 4096 MB

Thanks in advance to anyone who can provide guidance!!

Anyone???

This laptop (RTX 2060, i7-9750H, 16GB DDR4) ought to provide very playable frame rates with detail set to high at 1920x1080 (NVMe will also help reduce load times).

MS Flight Sim benchmarks for laptops and desktops: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mic...220.0.html

Note that Acer lists it [acer.com] for $1199 (same part number... not sure why Walmart lists it for $1399).

A couple other options for not much more money have better keyboards, 802.11ax, and a i7-10750H (newer and slightly faster CPU) and are lighter (but have smaller screens):

The Helios is Acer's next tier up, and the Legion 5 is a Lenovo with a 500nits 240Hz screen.

If your brother-in-law doesn't have a control stick, you may want to start looking. Most places are out of stock or are marking up what they have.
