You can buy a USB charged starter pack and leave it in the trunk with the tire or glovebox. Just recharge it every 6 months - 1 year. This is all the tow truck companies use to jump start a car now anyway.
One battery for another. And one that would rarely, if ever, get used. I'd personally rather have a newish battery and a jump pack (and I do have one).

is Duracell a good brand for car battery?
I believe they are, I bought one a few years ago from batteries plus, with local install for free. Search for coupons. Cheaper and no membership needed.

Any recommendation on brand. Seeing lots on Amazon, but assuming most are junk.

unfortunately it isnt a simple answer to a seemingly simple question. lots of battery companies, including duracell sub the manufacture of batteries out to different companies. for example... my truck battery that is branded Duracell is made by east penn manufacturing, where as my passenger car battery is made by someone else. i only know this because i have friends who work at east penn. my car battery has been showing signs of failure and its not that old. my truck battery is going strong after at least 5 years. so yeah. it cant be a blanket yes or no question..

thankfully they have pretty good warranties.

wow... did battery prices increase at Sam's Club within the last year and half?

In March 2019, I bought the group 49 battery for just $91, according to my Sam's Club receipt.

it is now $101, after the $20 coupon.... which means it increased by $30 since March 2019? https://static.slickdealscdn.com/ima...lies/frown.gif
This is beauty of inflation due to JPowell prints so much money. The more USD floods into the currency circulation which raise inflation rate. Next year, almost everything will cost higher.

I remember paying for a McDonald's Big Mac with 3 coins(2 quarters and 1 nickel)... yeah.. I'm that old... Frown (also when gas pumps at gas stations didn't have credit card readers yet and I had to go inside to pay... gas was less than a dollar per gallon)

Does anybody have experience with getting a battery replacement under warranty at Sam's? Specifically, if i decide not to renew my membership and this battery goes out next year. Are the employees going to be clueless/is scanning the membership card part of the replacement process? Thanks

FWIW, walmart battery replacements are great, you just take it in and they put it in their "testing machine" which takes forever but you eventually walk out with a new battery

edit: upon looking, the replacement period is 3 years so yeah i'd want to be sure that i can easily get it replaced if i'm not a current member, i don't want to end up in a situation where there's 5 employees standing around the cash register figuring out how to do it

The actual US lead acid manufacturers of auto batteries is East Penn (deka) , Delphi, Exide and Johnson Controls. Duracell is likely a JC. You need to look closely on the battery to identify as custom brand is common (e.g. Autozone, Motorcraft) . I have a close friend who works for a battery recycler and in his opinion the Penn is slightly better on the quality which means they may have a longer life. Who sells East Penn... Advance auto for one. Optima was excellent years ago but new management needed more profit so they lowered quality and I would no longer recommend. I can verify that AGM is worth the extra cost in Diesel trucks. They seem to handle the additional vibration and have a longer life by years.
Johnson Controls no longer makes batteries, they sold it off last year, it's now "Clarios", other than that, same company, makes a lot of the OEM batteries (IE: Interstate/Costco/Walmart (EverStart)/Varta/Optima, and some DieHard (although I think Deka is going to make DieHard for Advanced/CarQuest with their recent purchase)

Deka/East Penn does make the Duracell line under license, and they're sold at Sams and Batteries Plus for the most part.

I checked a group 49/H8 battery at Sams and Costco. Costco's regular price is cheaper than Sams sale price. Costco sells Interstate batteries.

can anyone recommend the preferred method of swap? I have swapped regular way as well as swap when vehicle is already ON/ running engine.
One tech (@ Sams) told me to jump start my vehicle, and take out dead battery and install new and preserve all settings/ avoid entering system code again but I also heard that it's not a good idea to do that.

Since Covid the prices have gone up about 20%, and are continuing to go up. The battery I bought for my lawn mower 2 years ago was $29 and now $59...Using jump start until I retrofit with Walmart U1 $25 battery that used to be $20 last year. (Winter project)
LMAO I have been doing the same thing with my riding mower all summer, I got one of those battery jumper packs from Sears (R.I.P.) last year for free or damn near free and my riding mower battery must have gone bad last winter so I hooked the pack up, it started and been doing it every time I mowed since and it works.

Agreed. Unless it's flat dead, portable starters are great. Can't agree with tossing a good battery just because it's reached a certain age. Bad for the environment, but your money your choice really
A couple of websites say 99% of a car battery is recyclable, at least the standard lead acid ones used on ICE cars. I always turn the old one in to get my core fee back. I guess it's a matter of preference. I know for a fact car batteries don't last long in my climate so nursing it along and carrying something to jump the car just to eek out a little more life out of it isn't worth it. I maintain many of our cars and wouldn't expect my older relatives to find someone or call AAA. They get a fresh battery every few years. Time is the biggest factor for me getting stuck, safety is the biggest factor for my relatives.
