I have been using one of these hooked up to a receiver to stream Spotify. It works great.

Maybe I got a dud but the sound quality was significantly worse than when compared with a 3.5mm cable coming out of the same device. I ended up returning it.

Wish I could get a cheap unit like this that does AirPlay just for audio, annoying to have the TV on when I just want to stream music from my iOS device.

Does it have a microphone or battery built in? I want to use it in my car, but hate how Siri defaults to the built-in mic in 99.9% of these stupid adapters.

You could use a raspberry pi for that. If you're adventurous.

I agree, I am about to explore the shairport-sync option. I have some spare Dell Micro Computers which I use for Homebridge, but was having a tough time getting the audio enabled in my Ubuntu Server edition.

I'm assuming it means Dolby Atmos and similar codecs which allow for speakers to be placed not only in standard 5.1 or 7.1 surrounds, but also allows for speakers to be placed in the ceiling and have those play their own sounds. For example, if there is a storm in a movie, they might give lightning effect in speakers above. I don't think ANYONE would ever do that with this. Just ignore it.

3.5mm coming out of your phone to the speaker directly? This unit only has 3.5mm OUT to speakers. Wondering if using 3.5mm improves? Isn't the quality dependent on the speaker? This unit is information only right?

Stay with me here. I tested:
Ipad -> 3.5mm cable -> my stereo

then:
Ipad -> Bluetooth connection to the 1Mii receiver -> connected to the same stereo

The wired connection sounded great, the bluetooth receiver sounded awful.

Doesn't this work exactly the same as having an echo dot?

Just connect via Bluetooth to the echo dot and have a 3.5mm cable hook to speakers. i do this with all my dots and its one of their major redeeming features.

Would this be better quality for some reason?
