I recently found out about this and sure enough one of our soft rubbery squishy toys ended up with black mold inside. We kept up with it by squeezing any water out but inevitably it happened. I would say unless you're steam cleaning it and/or vinegar sanitizing it (or other disinfectant) bath toys are a recipe for disaster.
Hahah you're joking right? How many of us grew up playing with bath toys? Probably filled with old bath water. The same bath water we peed in lol. Probably should avoid drinking from the garden hose too.

Haha not joking on the black mold bit. But I don't disagree with you. Before I had my daughter, I felt parents were being too uptight about things. Recently, she had a bad bought of a stomach related "bug" and we spent a ton of money at the ER trying to diagnose her multi-day bouts of screaming and crying. I am in the camp that through exposure children can / will grow stronger, but some things can be avoided / not as beneficial. In this case, the black mold stuff I don't see as being very helpful in making my baby grow "stronger".
